For the past several months, I have been a campaign manager for Tom Gibbs (I)Louisiana 5th congressional district. Needless to say, I have had no time for hobbies ( i.e. photography). We had a huge district. To be exact, we had to make a showing in 22 parishes. My candidate had absolutely no experience in politics and our budget was just above $1000. To put that in perspective, the running mate had a budget of $ 500,000 and has been in office for many years. The goal was to get Tom's name out there so that he can run for a lesser role like state senate. Anyway we commanded 33,279 votes. I don't think that is bad for a man that has no experience, no money, and noone knows him. Next time we will have a larger budget.
I had a great time, and I got to meet tons of very good people. It was a learning experience for me.
On voting I am glad that the Republicans have taken over control of the house. I just wish that they had taken over the Senate.

democrats need to reign in the free spending and reckless pushing of social programs. Its clear the American people don't want it.
they either get their act together, or they WILL lose the senate next and then the presidency, in fact I think the presidency is the republicans to lose, here's hoping its Christie from my home state.

Because the Republicans have such a great track record of reducing federal spending. There's a difference between saying you should reduce spending and actually reducing it. We hear way to much of the former and see nothing of the latter.
So Adam, having seen the beast of public elections up close and personal, do you fell better about the system or worse?
That is a tricky question. I was able to meet some very interesting people. I had a good time doing it. It is a cut throat world and very competitive. I would have to say that I feel worse about the corruption that is involved in politics. The one thing that I found out was, everyone has their hand out. There are payoffs happening all over politics and I saw that 1st hand. The system in general is a good system. They do need to have term limits. There are some people on capitol hill that have been there for 30 years or better. I think that every single American should vote out the incumbents that have been there the longest. Congress was designed to have new faces in there all the time. Even the new Congressmen have to go to a congressmen school.

I agree but its a bit like nuclear disarmament, given the power of seniority, no state wants to give up its big guns unless all the other states will do the same.
We had two interesting changes here in California in the last two elections. Yesterday we took drawing the district lines out of the hands of the Congress, so districts will be drawn to represent communal interests rather than insuring re-election of sitting congressmen , and last election we voted in open primaries, with the hope of loosening up party control and giving the voters more middle of the road candidates, and fewer black or white extremist choices.
Things are't great, but where there is breath, there is hope.
