Slippery slope yes... but there needs to be some accountability for things published. The net is a newish medium. The press has always been held accountable by it's readers and/or the civil courts. Other civilians have been kept in check by swift ass-whippin's for making such statements. Come to think of it, the courts should have just given those affected the douchebag's address.

While its sounds great to those offended, i have a problem with jailing this guy.
I hope this doesnt happen here in the US. Granted there can be a fine line border on free speech and harasment.

It always amuses me (and saddens me at the same time) whenever something like this makes people cry for "freedom of speech". I'm sorry, you don't have, nor SHOULD you have, the freedom to outright prey on the emotions and sensitivities by what you say or write.
Jailing would be harsh and an over-reaction in 99.99% of cases. In a case like this, however, where someone has CLEARLY and REPEATEDLY engaged in actions that were far above your usual criticisms, insults and/or other things of that nature then I'm all for handing out some harsh punishment. Hopefully it makes a statement and causes people to maybe stop and think for a moment.
As for slippery slopes, meh. Anything can be a slippery slope if you want it to be. Not doing something would be worse than worrying about where actions MIGHT go in the future.

I just just don't want it common practice to start jailing people because they got upset over what someone posted about them on the internet, especially against those in positions of power.

Hardly. This is a far, far different case than arguments getting heated. In fact, they're about as different as you can GET. Now, if someone on this site signed up on my facebook and started leaving threatening and abusive posts for no reason at all, other than they get off on the fact that I'd be upset about it, I'd hope they could be punished for such behavior. If they merely called me names and insulted me because I was arguing with them, in the same forum, then whatever.
I think that troll got what he deserved. I think that the right to freedom of speech has to be balanced with the rights of victims of abuse. Here in Australia there have been teenage suicides because of nasty and concerted campaigns of intimidation and defamation, conducted by bullies via internet and cell phone, against other students.
IMO, if words posted on the internet can drive someone to suicide, the larger problem lies not with the bully. *queue audible gasps*

Mind you I am keeping my opinions limited to the context of posting on the internet and between adults, not minors. There are already too many attempts to stifle free speech in this country and it's all being done for power and politics. There are MANY people that spew what I consider to be hateful speech (i.e. 80% of YouTube comments on ANY video) and while it sounds nice to pass some law allowing me to burn their village and shut them up, it is the last thing I want to do. We must take the bad with the good if we want to remain free. I think it's utterly foolish to think you can draw a line and that line will never get moved over and swallow you up when you end up saying the wrong thing. Oops, I think I may have called some of you fools. That is hate speech. I am going to go turn myself in now. :(

Also, it's one thing when you're in a controversial conversation and maybe you say something offensive, and another thing to put rude things on someone's page, especially when their family died. Who does that? Jerk!

Lol, i totally get what you're saying, I'm 50/50 about this. In a way I think it's a good thing he got punished, but there's always going to be rude people like that guy. And I'm so sick of hearing about all the suing and harassments as it is, i can't even imagine hearing something like "Joe Shmoe called Ana Bannana a hoe so he had to be put behind bars" type news. Although, it would be funny.
