Today you have a traitor among you in your fair country but he's not an American, he's a Canadian. His name is Gilles Duceppe and he heads the Bloc Quebecois political party that wants one thing and only one thing; for Quebec to separate from Canada and become a sovereign country. He's in your country to promote his idea of creating an illusion that Quebecers want to separate. This is untrue. The majority of Quebecers, which is growing day by day, do not want to separate, they want to remain Canadians. The polls show this every time one comes out.
So don't go believing all the bullshit that this insignificant politician has to say about what we as Quebecers want. He is out of the loop and has been for a while. It's a wonder he still gets the votes to remain in power. Even Quebecers are asking questions about his role in federal politics. He is the sole reason we have a minority government in Canada today. He's part of the political elite in Quebec who think that separation is the only way Quebec will survive although Quebec is already surviving very well being a province in Canada. In fact Quebec is doing very well economically even while the US and some parts of Canada are still struggling.
Poll after poll we see the same results, separation is on the minds of politicians and not the population. Even the French are siding with federalism these days.
He wants to stay in power and he uses this old excuse of separation as his mandate, which goes against what his flock are seeking.

PS. He's visiting the Woodrow Wilson Insitute btw and I just read this quote from WW himself.

We don't care about Quebec leaving Canada, unless they want to join the Union, and even then we probably wouldn't care becuase you aren't Mexicans.

Don't be too sure.... I was a permanent resident in Canada during the 1995 referendum and 49.42% voted yes to a separate Quebec. Too close for comfort if you ask me! Lucien Bouchard should've been charged with treason. As should Duceppe.

That looks like it'll cost tax payers trillions. My plan would be much more cost effective, which would be to simply blow up the rest of Canada. That would create a new Grand Artic Ocean, which Quebecers would be free to exploit for oil. In time the explosives would pay for themselves. Win win.

Reminds me of the story about the guy who was walking on the beach at Santa Monica, where Interstate 10 ends, and he stubbed his toe on an ancient, tarnished lamp. So he rubs it to see what it's made of, and pops a distinctly cranky, querulous Genie who said, "You can call me Art, and I'll be your Genie today. He's the longest-serving party leader in the Commons. During debate and interview, he comes off as intelligent and affable, and never lets an opponent dodge a question (much like Lucien Bouchard -- do you remember his performance against Kim Campbell?). His politics are left-leaning and secularist, and he routinely advances the rights of social and ethnic minorities.
Despite any of this, he and his party always win a majority of the seats in Quebec during federal elections. That is not an insignificant achievement, because he obviously represents a sizable population of Quebecers. He is "insignificant" only insofar as he is an irritant to federalists, rather than a successful separatist. Otherwise, he is an astute and highly successful politician.
