She'll probably object, and that's ok I'm sure we can convince her otherwise...
First a bit of backstory, ok, now that you understand she trashed her gear saving a life and the parents did absolutely nothing to compensate her, here's the deal:
I think we need to take a fund for her, just to help set the karmic balance back to harmony. I don't think we should try to get a camera, but maybe we can spread the gap for her to upgrade to something a bit nicer than her poor dead 50D, or just a nice filter.
I am no good at running this type of thing, and as such I'm hoping ThingFish or someone will volunteer to be the transaction coordinator for us.
As always, any amount is ok, this (for me) is more about rewarding acting like a good human being, than it is to raise money for her, as she hasn't indicated any need for help. I just think it's a damn shame we live in a world where you get punished for doing what's right.
I think that little girl's parents should buy a camera for her... what do you think?
I think they should.. But they won't. So it's pretty much left up to the kindness of DPC'ers if any justice is to be had.
Who I feel even worse for than JulietNN is that poor girl.. Clearly she doesn't mean much to her parents.
ETA: No offense, but I feel you must have missed the bit in my post about this being more about rewarding being a good human that it is about getting her a new camera. Hell, maybe we only raise enough to get her a nice Hoya filter... Whatever, she should be rewarded with something, and I'm a bit surprised at your negative response.
Normally I like to just watch these things play out (a sick form of reality entertainment, I suppose), but I'll chime in with my highly devalued two cents. I don't see anything posted earlier as a "negative response". I love Juliet to death and think she is an awesome human being and I would be happy to pitch in if she indicated that she was not in a position to help herself. I think Mambe's cause was absolutely worthwhile and justified and my concern is that if there is a thread taking up donations for everything that occurs, the folks like Mambe, who really need the help will not get it because people will grow callous to these types of causes.
A noble idea, though, Cory and this is just my opinion, so don't let me discourage you if others are interested and you don't agree with my thinking on this. I would be happy to nominate her for some virtual award of some sort though - there's no harm in recognizing her heroic actions here in the community.

*shrug* Perhaps you are right, I'd be interesting in a bit more input before calling it dead, as no matter if it's not impossible for her to afford it or not, unless she's a multimillionaire, there's no doubt that a $1000+ hit hurts. But if that's the case, then I'll just redirect it into:
Buy JulietNN a freaking beer thread, because that's the least she's getting out of me on this score, and you of all people Art might think about donating a beer, it somehow seems just your style. But in that case I'll just post her a crispy $10 spot, if not a beer a steak for the grill, whatever.
Yeah, basically this is more or less my response to my disgust with the society we live in that almost never rewards actions like this, that are supposedly admired... I admire, respect and desire to (in whatever small way) reward her actions.
ETA: As it is, I think both her and Mambe are quite extreme cases, despite the short duration between the two.
And FocusPoint, I do hope your response wasn't negative, it just seemed a bit overtly dismissive, Art's post was much more useful and that's really saying something ;) I mean, after all, he is the popcorn guy..
I enjoyed my time with her and the rest of the DPC crowd that came out on Friday night. She is a very gracious woman and Im a better person for having met her :) Soon we will come to her neck of the woods and raise all kinds of hell, just you wait...

No need to vilify the parents. Kids wander, it happens. It would nice if the parents offered to help replace the camera, but they may not have the ability to do so. 10% unemployment in California, no jobs, etc. I'm quite certain they were mortified and grateful. Julliet can now enjoy the peaceful satisfaction of having saved a life. Reward enough in my opinion. The rest is icing on the cake.

Say what you will, but I definately think the parents need some disparaging... Actually, my real problem here is that there are just so many parents that are inconvenienced by their children, and this sounds like another set of parents that were too busy thinking of themselves to give a shit about their child. And that clearly does not bode well for the poor kiddo. I'm not sure what sort of world you live in bspurgeon, but I see this every day, and it makes me just a little bit sick.
The child's lucky Juliette was there to act. More often than not, if the victim suffers any ill effects, the rescuer is sued. Let's hope that doesn't happen.
Well, you still have 1 out of 3, but I don't think that I would put that CF card in another camera until you run it through the washing machine to get the salt off the contacts. It could corrode up the tiny wire contacts in your new camera and cause all kinds of problems.
