Ok, I've got CS5 and using a Mac. Save the Mac/Windows crud until AFTER we figure this out, then have at it! :P
Trying to save a file to enter in a challenge, optimizing for file, it does it's think, I hit save. Cool beans! BUT, when I go to uplift the photo, my computer tells me the file size on the disk image is 303 kb. Any ideas? This is SO frustrating! I"m marking progressive, not optimize, I'm making it RGB...everything is flattened...I'm out of ideas! (And of course I want it for tonight!)
Can someone please help? I've been trying to fixe this for 3 days and I refuse to enter a shot that's 500x500! Ugh!
Use "Save for Web & Devices". That gives you more options. When the pop up window opens adjust the jpg quality field (see right most circle in link below). While you are adjusting the value keep an eye on the file size in the lower left hand corner. Once you have the desired file size hit save.
That's what I've been doing, but the file size shown (lower left) when saved is NOT what the file size is when I go to upload. it's weird! I'm so frustrated. :( Thanks for the suggestion. :)
Kat, this doesn't help you I know, but I have exactly the same issue with CS5 (and as you know, I'm also a mac). I use optimise to file size, choose 300kb and then when try to upload here for a challenge it is always too big (by 2-5kb) I now just save it at 298 kb and that seems to do the trick. (I always leave out the exif)
Did you try to upload it?... if not, try. It will probably be accepted.
Saved at 296kb and it is 303 kb on the 'puter, and NO, it won't be accepted by DPC, lol.
The file size listed in the (Mac) upload dialog box and Finder is a few (+ or -) KB's larger than the actual file size. That's the reason I suggested you try the upload.
Yep, just another echo of the same old song... the metadata does add some, and Ps only calculates the size of the data, so you always need to shave a bit off.
FWIW, *don't* check "progressive." That actually takes more space for the same end image quality. The difference with progressive is the image first displays a low-quality version, which gets "progressively" better as more data is downloaded. That was a good thing back when dialup was king, but it is not a good thing for your challenge entries, as the first version of your image the voter will see will be *bad*.
That's good to know about progressive. But why would the optimize option create a file larger than the optimize for file size entry when the embed check box is left blank?
