A minister explained to me one time that it could also be that it isn't a NUMBER, but actually a name, that in English translations comes down as 666, or something like that. It was kind of a convoluted conversation, but interesting.
As a completely unrelated aside -- when my son was 6, he started playing football for the Bethel Demons. His number? 66.
(now he is 8 yo, and still number 66 for the demons).
According to Isaac Asimov the "number of the beast" is a coded way of referring to a contemporaneous political mucky-muck (e.g. Emperor Nero) whom it would have been unwise (i.e. fatal) to criticize by name. There have been many methods of calculating the number -- depending on whom the calculator wishes to designate as the evil one -- and so there have been many various attributions throughout history.
666 is the number for the devil or anti-christ for this reason.
7-number of perfection and 6 is almost there, but not quite. The anti-christ is going to have many attributes and deceive people, will even suffer a mortal wound and be brought back.

There was quite a to-do a few years ago when the 616 version was publicized, as millions of Michigan residents suddenly found their phone numbers listed under Hell's area code ...
PS: I bet there are a lot of people -- perhaps even some posting in this thread -- who would pay extra to get a phone number with a 666 prefix ... ;-)

Chalk one up for sloppy handwriting/translations. One day everyone will realize that the bible is really the book of dog.
Tell someone to hand copy a book that is thousands of pages long. Now have 5000 more people do it, in succession, with every 50th person translating it into a different language or dialect. Compare the first copy to the last. The difference would shock and amaze you.
