300ppi at the final size of 8x12 should give you plenty of latitude for offset or giclee printing. If possible, scan the negs or slides, whatever the first generation is. If you scan prints you'll be acquiring the paper texture as well as your image. Save as "tiff" since it's a lossless compression. If you use LZW compression with it, you will usually save 50% of the files size from raw. If using Photoshop, save with a color profile.
