Hmmm... In some ways I agree whole heartedly. However-- this would really suck for all of us wildlife photographers. My portrait of a cardinal probably looks exactly like another portrait of a cardinal.

THIS, however, is a stupid idea. Imitation is the sincerest form of flattery. Perhaps you need to be more clear here, because as it reads, it would seem that Irene would lay claim to water drops, Roz to bugs and so on.
Many of us have not been on the site long enough to even know that someone tried to copy another photo and to tell the truth....I don't care! If the image is well done and appeals to the voters, it will get the score it deserves by majority vote. It's ironic that currently there is a thread about "The final image matters most" - and I agree. :-)

This site is awash with copies, I've done it myself, I'm sure many others have, it's an excellent way of learning, trying to figure out and recreate the conditions that someone more talented / more experienced did before you.
Why would you WANT to call them out, why would you want to change other peoples opinion of them? Isn't it enough that you don't like it for being a copy without biasing others too?

How do you copy an entry in a competition if you can't see other entries until after the submission period is over?

I'm thinking of just starting a thread called "Brilliant Photos That Inspired Us" and putting photos there that are exactly like photos currently in the challenge. People who think originality is worthless can ignore the thread.

It's patently ridiculous to even entertain the idea that any original ideas are going to surface. Someone's done it before, somewhere, some time. Yeah.......blatant plaigarism isn't cool, but seriously? You have to know what you're suggesting won't work. If you don't emulate people whom you admire, and learn how and why they do what they do, how can you expect to develop your own style once you understand how those before you did it?

Don.....the whole of photography in the first place is capturing something that already is......yeah, you can put your own spin on it, but you're reproducing something's existence. How is that original?
