Anyway, I noticed that the thumb number was 900003 and was just wondering if anyone noticed if their's were the 90,000 upload? A bit of a milestone that may be kept in mind when the 100-thousandths arrives.
If my memory serves me correct, there was a thread one time predicting when we would hit one million. I looked briefly for it, but couldn't find it. May be interesting to dig it up and see if anyone was close.

Just for some perspective, Shutterstock has over 12 million photos online (my puny contribution is here).
I can't remember the exact figures (posted in another thread a few months ago) but archives like Corbis, Getty, and the New York Times have something like 40-80 million images ...

I did the prediction long ago. It followed a really nice exponential growth curve. I updated it it a few months back, and got depressed. According to the then-trend, we should have crossed 1 million some time ago. As it is, I can't predict anything, because the rate of change (slowing) of the trend is a complete unknown.
ETA: Here's the original analysis, which predicted 1 million in early June of 2009.

Sounds like you're suffering from the same syndrome that killed a ton of businesses during this recession.. Essentially growth is limited, and will always slow then halt, plateauing in some period of time.
This holds true for anything I can think of - even sand is eventually subducted and remelted.
So, I submit this should be something that is to be celebrated, as it would indicate that DPC has matured.
Now, when you see exponential decline, then, and only then, I would say that being depressed is legitimate.

When growth in uploads slows dramatically, it truly is reason for concern, especially when one compares to other sites that didn't even exist when we were already a couple years old, and now have orders of magnitude more uploads.
Now don't get me wrong, uploads aren't everything. But they are a big thing.

Too true, and I suppose I was referring more to rate than actual numbers. Although, given that we would of course need to see a plateau before we could even speak of decline.
And I suppose, it would be more useful to measure how many submitters are active, rather than how many submissions, or perhaps a metric that takes both into account, giving a submissions/user/month measurement...
And I do think, rather strongly, that the other places are just better at marketing.
Indeed, perhaps it would be even more useful to look at member lifespans and member bounce rates, I would suspect that DPC has an unusually good track record with member retention, which is perhaps more important than any other measure.
