Presumably this was on an image in voting? If so, users can delete those just by removing the contents of the text box. On images not in voting, I don't know how that would be done without specific action from the SC.
I am not certain about this, but I think that if the voter who made a comment did not vote the required 20% that the comment is expunged along with the vote.
If it's from your portfolio, did you tidy up your portfolio recently? (by tidy up, I mean delete or hide some). That's the only way I can think if it's nothing to do with a challenge.
well, on the Top 10 Statistics List of Comments, I have 11,700, but on my profile page I have 11,659, somewhere I lost over 41 comments since the last update...I've sent in an inquiry to the SC...I actually have a little over 11,700 and I keep watch at all times...so this is very weird indeed...so I'm not alone

If YOU delete a photograph with a comment, you loose the comment.
If the user that left the comment account get closed, you loose the comment.
If a voter votes less than 20% you KEEP the comment.

I'm not talking about received comments...but comments that I have made...
Last night I was at 11,701 I think..today 11,659 - 41 comments less (made not received...) kind of weird
I guess that if someone left DPC (how could they) and they were active in the Challenges/Side Challenges then I might be able to lose 41 of my comments...but I don't know...seems like alot in one day to loose

Someone was probably cleaning up their portfolio. Mine is overdue...so don't be surprised if you lose a few more.

Nope, it happened overnight.
Guess I was typing quickly at work yesterday when I should have been concentrating! What I meant to add was I tidied my portfolio up a few weeks ago, deleting some images with comments, but the total number of my comments did not change. However, yesterday morning (or whenever it was - I'm in a different time zone than normal and am 12 hours out of balance with the DPC world) the number had dropped as I would have expected when I cleaned the portfolio earlier.
