So, ultimately, I''m not too concerned about the number of comments I received this last week. In fact, given my new way of deciding how many comments to dole out (I''ve decided to give at least as many comments as I receive each week) it was kind of nice.
I was curious though if anybody can "beat" a 5% comment return (12 comments, 236 votes) in relation to the number of votes cast on their photo (lower than, not higher).

that's interesting, i've kind of set myself a target of comments made based on the comments i receive, too. i try to give at least 2 for every 1 i receive, even though i fell just a little bit short this week.
my wish is still that people would comment on those photos that they rate lower. i've always done that, but this week i also added my name and the vote to my comments. it was really hard. but also good, because it REALLY made me rationalize my vote and not just go 'eh, don't like the subject', or, 'uh, it's raining, and i'm in a bad mood'. :)

242 votes, 18 comments = 7.4% Most of the comments were positive, though. I think being in the "middle-third" in the scoring (and the large number of submissions) probably hurt the number of comments. My guess is that an analysis of this ratio (score vs. comments) would show an inverted bell-curve: photos scoring 2-3 and 8-10 getting the most comments; those scoring 4-7 the fewest.
235 votes, 16 comments. Maybe we'll study percentages in fifth grade. Right now, I don't know how to do the math. I was pleased to place so highly on my first submission against adults and professionals (besides, I beat my mom!)
I ended up with 10 comments from 234 votes - 4.27% I wish I had gotten a few more, since only one of them suggested anything about fixing the commented areas.

How is it that you have 2 more votes than I do? They just couldn't stand to even click the button on mine??? :-(
thanks ruthann! And thank you for the comments. This is my do-it-yourself summer school. The comments, and trying to figure out what I see when I look at everyone's photos are my photography class! Those comments that tell me why the woodgrain doesn't go with the blue glass were really helpful. The best comments tell what could've been done differently. Even if I disagree at least I learn.

Great job -- I gave you a 7. To figure the percentage, divide the smaller number by the bigger number, and shift the decimal point two places to the right.
I'm looking forward to my 5 year old son beating me one of these weeks...

1 - Don't get too antsy... give people some time! There's 114 images to comment on, and I give all the credit in the world to those who have started their commenting!
2 - Comment more! If the 10 people in this thread who are upset about their low comments commented on all the images, everyone would have lovely numbers ;)
