I was wondering if there are any restrictions on submitting a previously published photo... It was shot within the time frame, published the following day by the local paper on their web site and will likely make it to print on Wednesday.
Sooo... Aside from the fact that someone might recognize the photo, I didn't see anything in the challenge rules prohibiting published photos from being submitted... Guess I'll post this, submit the photo and move on. Perhaps not the best photo, but timely and it has a real headline :)
I have no idea and I'm sure someone will let you know but I have been looking back over my paper's shots and those of on line papers and am shocked by the lack of quality on a lot of them. The lack of composition and clarity in the shots. I wonder if that will play this time on the voting.
Well, some scenes don't allow you to be too picky about composition and clarity and such to get the shot. Time is of the essence. So if you happen to get good shots of something newsworthy, your local paper will most certainly be interested. The pay isn't great, but...
Consider the famous photo of President Reagan being shot, Secret Service officers reaching for guns and covering the President... The photographer got lucky. He only got off two shots, as his camera was a manual-wind camera (medium format, not the push-lever 35mm type) and the other shot was completely unusable. HOWEVER... he made $250k off that shot in a week.

As a non-official opinion - I believe there is no specific DPC rule about entering a shot that has been published elsewhere. Just be ready to submit proof if a DQ request is issued.
Good point on the DQ. I think it should be simple enough to prove who I am (and therefore reference the photo credit) and provide the original file/exif/etc. We'll wait and see :)
