I like them both. The black and white shot is a little more emotive. I would go a little further with these and clone out the redness in the eyes. One small critique would be the shallow depth of field used to blur the nose. If you could get the shot with a smaller aperture then they would be perfect IMO.
In reference to the aperture. I shot this at 1.8 with 1/60 shutter speed. Used a sb600 from her left and on board flash. How far should I go up with the f stop and which shutter speed would be good for this situation?

3.2 on this one... still not good depth.. maybe 6-8?
Wow. I got my thinking all wrong on this then. I'm thinking lower aperture = sharper image but I'm loosing all my depth in close ups. I'm still trying to get the hang of this 35mm.

Primes are sometimes at their softest wide open at 1.4 or 1.8 (my 50mm and 85mm certainly are) and are at their sharpest stopped down a bit to 2.8 or 4 onwards. I don't tend to mind that and do a lot wide open as i love the shallow dof and am not that bothered about some images being soft.
