i've just received an email from Will Borland, guitarist, in aussie band Death Audio who found me thru my site ..
this is what he said ..
"I’ve been browsing the net for a couple of weeks looking for photographers and designers to put together a concept for my band’s debut album. And I keep coming back to look at your photos on your website. I would be interested to know if you would like to put together quote for me.
At the moment I am looking for a quote for a concept and photos for a 12 page album booklet. Originally I was going to use aCanadian photographer Joshua Hoffine , but after a good think about it. I would really like to represent an Australian Photographer."
does anyone in dpc have any idea how can put together a quote .. :)
i've never done anything like this .. so i have no idea ..

You could ask the man himself, Will Borland... That's what I used to do when someone established wanted to hire me for something the likes of which I'd never done before. I'd just ask them what it was worth to them, and go from there. I never had anyone resepctable quote me a figure I thought was too low...
Maybe that's too naive for today's more rapacious business climate, I donno...

it works for me .. i do naive really well, so i think i'll take your advice .. !!
but you usually get an idea if someone is trying to take advantage of you, altho not always ..
but they're ultimately the losers, not you .. :)

spot on advice, bear. the only times i've lost work or gotten work i ended up regretting was when i failed to ask either, "What's your budget for this?" or "What did you pay that last time you did this?" when i've quoted without asking, i've usually quoted too high or too low. when i ask, it's either acceptable, or i can get them to come up a bit, or i politely take a pass.

good perspective! do keep your antenna up and your eyes open. just because you haven't done this work before doesn't mean you have to be taken advantage of...

Keep in mind that music is a pretty tight business and word of mouth for a job well done will mean potential business with other groups. You could almost comp this one and come out ahead (if this is the type of thing you want to do). Regardless, it will make a great addition to your resume and portfolio.
I'm not recommending you comp this, but simply pointing out that even if they short you on price, it is still not necessarily a bad thing.

Hey Roz, be careful about quoting the band name in the original post. If the band googles themselves they might find the link to this thread, and DPC seems to rank pretty highly in google.

on soapbox i'll agree that it's not the end of the world to take a little less than what you should get, especially the first time out...
but
comping is NOT a good way to do or get business. giving away freebies after someone has paid for something: good. using promotional discounts: good. loyalty programs: good. word of mouth: great! except...when they also share the price they paid! and if that price is $0, then word of mouth: BAD!
by charging professional rates (and not grossly undercutting the professional competition), you build value; all you have to do is deliver, and everything's fine.

thanks Skip .. no way am i doing this for nothing, but seeing i havent done this sort of work before i'm not going to charge the earth either .. so i totally agree with your .02 ...
i want to give them something original and different and then i'll be hoping for word of mouth .. designing album covers would be my dream job .. !!
I have no concrete advice to give. However, regarding someone's recommendation that you ask what they were looking to pay:
When I started my computer consulting business, and had my first client on the ropes, I had no idea what to charge. My dad recommended that I ask her, and I thought that was the stupidest piece of advice that I'd ever heard. Since I never did find someone to give me advice, I, very uncomfortably, went ahead and asked her. She quoted a price that was $10 more per hour than I had been considering.
Nothing to offer as help, just want to say congrats on your new found opportunity to do something different and exciting like this. I'm sure you're going to impress them with whatever you come up with. Beautiful site you have too, lots of fantastic stuff. Faved it for future browsing. :)

everytime someone comments in this thread it makes me so grateful for our dpc community ..
i havent been so active since christmas coz so much has been going on with my photography ..
& i have only dpc to thank for the wonderful education, motivation, inspiration and friendships that this site has provided ..
another amazing thing along with the album cover is that i'll be featured in a magazine called 'Digital Photographer' which is available throughout australia and new zealand .. its bi-monthly mag/114 pages and they're going to devote 8 pages to me, my tips for shooting bugs in the wild, about 12 of my pics etc .. issue 10 is out now focusing on portraits, issue 11 will be landscapes and issue 12 will be macro which will be out at the end of july .. they found me thru my website which has only been online for a few weeks .
the band found me thru my website too .. just got emails from both out'v the blue ..
also since christmas i've had exhibitions, hanging in local cafes and heaps more .. i dont want to bore you .. ! .. lol ..
but i spose this thread is somewhere i can say thankyou to the wonderful ppl in dpc and say also that none of it would have happened without you .. :)
