I have seen many images here in peoples portfolios that have little or no info about the image. I would like to use this option instead of looking up dates, lenses, exposures, etc. etc. I have these drop down boxes when I'm downloading an image, say to my workshop, that I can't delete. Unless I change the default info there it would be incorrect. Thanks for any help with this as it would be helpful when downloading a large number of images.
He's expressing the other side of the coin. Just a little while ago there was a push to have the default camera and lens info automatically entered for each image posted; before these fields were blank by default. So now, if you DIDN'T use the default camera and/or lens you have to change it. This is very inconvenient if you're bulk uploading, he'd prefer there was nothing in those fields.

I imagine a workaround would be for Langdon to provide a "none" category for default camera and lens; as far as I can see now, if you actually have ANY cameras/lenses listed in your profile, then one of them MUST be selected as default...

No, you weren't. This is a relatively new thing, that the fields are filled by default. Couple months, maybe?
One of the drop down options is "No Camera Specified" and/or "No Lens Specified" -- if I'm reading correctly, the suggestion is to have those pop up as the defaults rather than whatever camera/lens is listed as the default lens in the User Preferences?
What if you could change the default to None in the User Preferences panel - would that solve it?

I wasn't able to set 'no camera' as a default. I ended up deleting the camera when I tried.
I've been begging for this. This came about when EXIF camera settings started becoming auto-populated (shutter, f-stop, ISO). But for those of us who use lots of cameras and lenses, putting the defaults in is either a pain to change or potentially misleading to viewers if I forget to change them. I have the feeling a lot of false information is showing up on images since this went into effect.
Same thing with auto-populating the current date as the exposure date if none is found.
