any one know if the long exposure Noise reduction in a D200 is worth while doing? with a long exposure it will take some time to take the second shot

I could never notice the difference, it certainly wasn't woth the loooonnnng time it took to process, so, I turned it off long ago.
it actually doubles the time for the shot. So if you have a 30 second exposure it takes an additional 30 seconds to do noise reduction. (if you ever decide to do shots that require several minute exposures like star trails then turning off the long exposure NR is an absolute must!)
I think that you'd be better off doing your noise reduction in post.
I love long exposure shots, but I have a feeling that this challenge is going to be way out of my league; there are going to be some amazing entries. I guess I'll have to suck it up and prepare myself for a sub-5...

I'm hoping I will this time. I had a lot of fun doing my shot.
In shutter-priority (Tv) mode you can go up to 30 seconds programmed. You just set it with the dial. If you have a cable release and want a longer exposure you go to manual mode (M) and this will allow you to set "bulb", where as long as you physically keep the cable release (or shutter button) depressed the shutter stays open. Or at least until your battery runs out :-O
If you are using programemd long exposure without a cable release, activate the self-timer and use a tripod. You program in 20 seconds, whatever, activate self timer, and wait; camera stops moving before shutter is opened.
Also, it says "Use a longer than normal exposure to create the impact of your image." 30-seconds is more than enough for a "longer" exposure.
I know but I had a really cool idea and I thought it all out but I would need atleast a min. I figured my camera would do a minute... guess I was wrong LOL

The bulb setting keeps the shutter closed for as long as you keep the trigger down.
