So I have just recently started dipping my toe into the water of senior portrait shoots, mostly for co-workers who ask me to shoot for their children. I have uploaded my latest and would like any comments or criticisms you have. There are alot of pics in this collection but a comment on just 1 or 2 would be much appreciated!
Some nice stuff. One thing I quickly noticed is that she's not smiling in many of them.

Thanks for you comments all, and Peter I do agree about the lack of connection. It was kinda one of those things where I met her when she showed up up for the shoot and we just got started. Plus she brought her sister with her but then made her turn around and not look at her everytime I started shooting :) Teenagers....
I did a senior shoot recently (with 3 girls btw) and one of the mothers requested several pics of her daughter not smiling. She said she didn't have one single picture where the kid wasn't smiling and she wanted a few shots with less teeth.
The kid said it was not to smile - but the other 2 girls showed her how and gave her some tips on what to think so she wouldn't smile. The non-smiling pictures turned out very well. I'm most pleased with one of the shots of the 3 girls none of them were smiling. I'm at work now but if I remember when I get home I will load it up and show you.
I think having the 3 girls there made it so much easier than if it had been just one. Especially if I didn't know them. Of this group I knew one of them.
So I would think having the sister there would have helped eased the tension. And I'm glad to see you put her in some of the shots. :-)

one of the things i try to do, especially with young people is to get them in front of the camera and get them talking and laughing and start snapping. It's easiest when you have it on a tripod and they dont tense up as you look thru the viewfinder, but i have gotten some of my best shots this way
Nicely done Jason. To me she does look relaxed in many of the images. I did notice that in some of the images she lost her neck. Just have her push her shoulders down a bit, it is always more attractive on a girl. I like the locations you chose, and the lighting is soft and gorgeous. Well done. I hope she likes them, she should.

looks nice! i think there are many times when no smile or a "mona lisa smile" work quite nicely
Did you use any off-camera flash? I think that's going to be key to taking your shots to the next level.
no i dont own any, thats why i shoot outside almost exclusively. I have some plans, but my sites are set on studio flash first
I use the strobist method (strobist.com) - works for studio and outdoors and events...it's light, quick, and easy to set up. Just because you're outside doesn't mean you don't need flash lighting.

yeah i get that, the issue for me is money, i am not trying to do this as a full time job so i dont have the money to invest, i shoot outside because i have no lighting for indoor, studio type shots

Check out strobist. You can put together a three strobe triggered setup that you can use practically anywhere for less than $500. If you save up and buy "studio lights" they're only good for the studio as they're not portable.
