I know most people like to see the whole 800 but at what point may it be better to use a smaller size? In the past, I have worked on entries that look good all at once, but not as good if you have to scroll to see the whole "story".
At 800px on my monitor, I have to scroll to see the whole thing. (I know each person may have their monitors set differently)
If going to 650 or 700 on a side makes my shot fit in the average monitor and I feel it is best view without scrolling, do you think people will ding a point for the smaller size? It would be nice if we could vote in 1/10 increments, but we can't!
I would not ding something at 720 pixels vertical. The reason that size was originally chosen was that on a 1024x768 monitor, it was the maximum size that could be viewed all at once if menus and toolbars were hidden.
That is what my monitor is set on. 720 is about perfect for me. Unless someone is really getting crazy, I feel it is not a big deal !
Another thing...I know i've seen this before. Would you work on the original size and when done editing - resize? Or...is it best to start out at your final size and start editing from there?

sometimes i have that issue too. my screen is 1280X800 or something weird like that. I know it is helpful to see the whole picture. And i wouldnt ding you if you or anyone if it was slightly smaller. :)

i usually edit the picture and then i resize the image. if im understanding you correctly. but thats just me.
