It sometimes depends on the situation, but I'll either go and read something about photography or go shoot something familiar. I tend to want to try new things, but when in a rut it's nice to get out and shoot again without trying to be creative.
Hmm...usually a challenge description will betray what will do well. I try to foresee what the most popular trends will be - and either avoid them or skew them entirely...!

This may or may not be true but I read somewhere that creative juices are more active at wee hours of the night. The article that I read gave examples of famous artworks and artists who admitted that they are more creative at night. They don't necessarily do the artworks at night but the ideas come about at night.

ok well i take everybody's name and and put them on bricks, i then go outside wearing nothing but a loincloth,while my neighbor and his mariachi band play "born to be wild" by steppenwolf. chug a bottle nyquil and start juggling the bricks. when i came to, the mariachi band is usually doing body shots on a shaven yak with a case of patron silver.
First I try to decide if the subject lends itself to a unique way of shoehorning my shoehorn in. I fnot, I think about it while driving to and from work for a couple of days. If inspiration fails to hit me upside the head, I often browse Flickr for ideas that can jump start it.

Edit to add - I agree, night is my best time for creating - but the light sucks - GRIN! And my children demand that I be awake every day! I think I must continue to be a struggling photographer (at least that what my DPC score card says!)
