I will be going there in December, my folks have place there. From what I hear the everglades are amazing, lots of crocs and gators and great birds... sorry all the info I have.
There is a beach 'blowhole beach' is I think its name, you may want to check it out, my folks have shown me some nice pics from there and they are not photographers really.
These are pretty far apart, but check out the web pages, and the travel may be worth it. As far as stuff in the Everglades, the National Park Service, the Miccosucci Indians, and others offer a variety of activities and tours and tourist stuff. Good Luck!!

Ding Darling is a great preserve - I managed to go once while I was at the Sanibel Harbor Resort. Good recommendation!
the everglades is an excellent place to get amazing wildlife photos. just going south of miami to florida city and following signs to the main park entrance is your best bet. there are two easy-to-walk trails (gumbo-limbo and anhinga) which will afford wonderful views. it's a great afternoon outing. also don't miss robert is here which is on the road into the park...amazing fruit.
alternatively, shark valley is interesting and has a tall lookout for expansive views.
i also agree about the keys (largo, bahia honda, west--might as well while your on the road!) and the southwest coast.
I LIVED as close to the everglades as you can get, for most of my life! All the way out on Griffin Road, close to where it ends (the Everglades).
I used to drive down Alligator Alley for my best shots. Take the alley to the 1st rest stop and wait for sunset, you are guaranteed to see alligators at this time of year!!!
Another fun place to go, not this time of year though, is just past the Indian Reservation / Casino in the West Miami area (off Okeechobee) down a single lane road, forever, until you get to some of the preserves. There's a place I went mucking last year. It's really wet, full of bugs and alligators. We went in the early spring, before Alligator mating season started, so we were lucky not to get eaten! :)

I am sure I have more, but my internet at work is acting up. So, enjoy these for now! Where are you going in S.FL besides the everglades? Where are you staying, what else are you doing there? Are you going on an airboat tour? Those are fun!
PS. When you go to the everglades, take Skin So Soft (it repells bugs) and also bring a snake venom extractor. It can work on mosquito bites too! You can get them in your camping section at Walmart or Target. :)
yeah, i live in lauderdale so the everglades are only a short drive away.

Well, I won't be going back for good until March 2006 but I'm planning on going to visit my family in the next couple of months.

Edit: Hey, you know what would be cool? If we got a group of DPCers together and went camping and of course, shooting in the Big Cypres National Preserve or something like that. That is something I've wanted to do for a while but no one in my family is up to it. That would be fun.
If close to Clyde stop into his gallery. He is there if not away at a show. He knows all the spots. He also offers workshops I think. He is the large format B+W master of that realm...
What lens where you shooting with, and where? Seems you got very close. Great detail, crispy focus, bokeh is good. You always come up with such great shots pitsaman.
