Welcome to the club first off... you chose the BEST DSLR under $5000 in my opinion and Ken Rothwells too. I just bought the Ai 55mm Macro f2.8-s lens for a very cheap price of $220 it is a fabulous lens you will always use .. Also I made the mistake of buying cheaper glass EX- Sigma 28-80 f3.5-4.5 at first then regreted it afterwards big time.. for the same price U was able to buy Nikon glass secondhand so now apart from my 170-500mm Sigma APO f5-6.3(which is very nice btw) and a Sigma 20-40mm f2.8 EX (also very nice) I tend to stick with buying 2ndhand glass with the nikon (nikkor) tag. i found a 28-200mm f3.5 Nikkor in a junk shop for $100 it was perfect. I found also a 80-200mm f2.8 ED Nikkor for $600 and finally i found an Ai 85mm f1.4 Nikkor portrait lens for the same $600 all were mint condition the most used one i own has to be the 28-200mm for its very handy focal range but i really enjoy using the manual fixed lenses that i own like the 55mm Macro and 85mm portrait.

I'll pee on your Parade by mentioning Fuji S3 man that is going to be a nice beast, If I can wrench the CC from she who must be obeyed.
Almost bought the S2 second hand! It looked nice as well but well it didn't have the features that the D70 had and I could buy the D70 new for the same price. Gotta admit the S3 does look great hey the S7000 takes great pics too but my wife loves it and she was having trouble getting it out of my hands so she could take pics too.
Its great to look through glass again though, I can focus the D70 so easily where I had lots of just oof shots with the S7000.
But trying to remember all the things in the manual for the D70 is gonna take me forever! Jeezzz it can do so much. Big learning curve.
One thing I didn't see mentioned yet you might want to think about. The ML-3 remote shutter control is pretty cheap (< $20) but is important for minimizing camera movement on the tripod. If you are a tripod man, you'll want to get on the wait list for one since just about every Nikon dealer in the world seems unable to maintain inventory of this unit.

When I got the camera I was concerned as I could not attach the flexable shutter control. Now it will be even easier! Cool

There are also Palm programs which can do this if you're using those PDAs. For me, the ML-3 seems a better fit since it's dirt cheap and smaller (and much less fragile) than my PDA. If you need something to tie you over though, there are all kinds of options for learning remotes. Too bad you can't control more of the camera from a PDA via I/R. That would be very cool!
Yes, I only use the Ipaq because I have one for my job.
Personally I find 20 USD for the ML-L3 not cheap, I think it is a rip-off, even if it is only 20 USD. One of those high margin gadgets they just ask for what they think they can get, nothing to do with costprice. And for my usage, nothing to do with real value for me either, so I won't buy.
Yeah. Btw, i got my on ebay, it's not ML-3, but it works just fine. It was something like $10.
Didn't realize there were multiple compatible options from Nikon... The D70 accessories page (if you can stand Nikon's web abuse) only listed the ML3. Could you post the model # so I can scan eBay as well? :)

Totally! I've been trying to get one since May. Just got it last week.
And I work in a camera store. That should tell you how hard it is to get this.
I you want a separate flash I suggest you look at SB-600. You might not need the extra's of the SB-800. Extra's are : some more power, diffuser (can buy stofen OM-EX diffuser separately if needed), extra battery pack, color filters, can be used as master (so can the build-in flash).

Wow the built in flash can be used as a master as well! Great stuff and the SB-600 comes with a stand as well I think I read.
Well, i can say that I just bougth the 80-400mm VR and it scares me to buy a lense that's more expensive then the camera!! After a few test shots though... it ROCKS!!!!!
Now my kit is finally complete (err.. for now)
18-70mm kit lens
105mm Sigma macro
80-400mm VR
the kit lense gives me the wide angle that I need, the VR gives me the reach and the macro lets me take little Jacko pics!! YEH!!!! Me be happy!!! Broke but happy. :-)
