Couldn't help myself... Encouraged by my wife I'm now (about an hour ago) the proud owner of the Nikon D70!
Waiting for the battery to charge, could only stretch the dollars to the 18-70 Kit plus 1gb Ultra II card.
So advise would be greatly appreciated on the extra goodies to get for it.
I guess I should expect my first ribbon in a week or 2...Ok maybe 3 ;-)

Good choice, I made the same choice last week. It is a fantastic camera.
I went to the ice skating of my kids again yesterday (after I had the wrong focus method the first time ....) and was again surprised about the speed. If you see a good action in the viewfinder, just press the shutter and you got the image, it is just so fast.
Recommended extra goodies ? A SB600 flash unit for sure.
I'd recommend an extra battery. The battery life is actually really good, but there's nothing more frustrating than not getting the shot over something like a dead battery.
As Bobs wife I don't think he needs anymore encouragement to spend money. Please recommend that he does not need any extras as he has just used up all his birthday and christmas presents for the next ten years. The plus to him buying the D70 is that now I don't have to share a camera with him.

You mention that you want fast glass. Please give serious consideration to the Nikkor 17-35 f/2.8
This is one major piece of photographic excellance. Fast became my favorite lens. Add a sf 50 f/1.8 or f/1.4 and a a reasonably fast tele and your off to the races.
Congrats. I'd suggest looking at the 70-300 ED to get you into the telephoto range. It's about $350 new, and between $250-$300 used. It's a solid mid-range lens to get you going.
That lens is good enough that it holds value when you decide to trade it in.

Nikon View is free, Nikon Capture is a 30 day trial, after which it costs 100 USD to continue.
Nikon view offers exposure and whitebalance adjustment on RAW format, Nikon Capture allows you to tweak it much more. It is extremely heavy on PC resources. I have only been using it for 2 days, but I think I will continue with Nikon View and Photoshop, not Nikon capture.

If your wife decides to murder you, don't forget to photograph it, at least she can sell the exclusive to the papers! In fact, why not just emigrate while you still can!

I have the lit lens and the Sigma 105mm macro which I love. My next purchase will be the 80-400mm VR and that sould keep me happy for a few months at least. Be prepared to spend though!! ;-)
Nikon View (it consists of a browser, viewer and editor) does the job with Photoshop 6, I assume also with CS.
If you try to open a RAW image in Photoshop it gives you the opportunity to adjust exposure and white balance before loading it.
The alternative is to open the image with either View or Capture, make the adjustments and then send it to Photoshop.
