If I get a "4", it tells me that relative to DPC standards I was below the 50% mark for my photography.
Relative to the rest of the field in the challenge, that would be what my vote was saying, yes. I'm using the entire scale and judging within the context of this challenge.
So a score of 4 does indeed mean that you're below what I considered to be the average FOR THIS CHALLLENGE.

I already responded to this with a number of reasons, foremost of which was in order to forestall the usual bitching in forums about how anyone could possibly give a 1 to XYZ picture.

That's at least somewhat helpful, but in the scheme of things I have to agree with the punk in the cowboy bar analogy. It's not against the rules, but I don't think many folks who get low scores will take great comfort in knowing that you vote differently than everyone else. Like I said, I get what you're doing, I just don't agree with it.
But it's a Friday, so I don't care all that much unless it in some way impacts me getting a cold beer in about an hour and 20 minutes ;)

But then, I don't vote in order to provide comfort, I vote to give my personal feedback on how I like an entry compared to the other entries in the challenge!
On Fridays, I usually order a Pizza. It's quick and easy and my wife doesn't have to cook it. When it arrives, I usually eat the piece facing me first, and work my way around in a clockwise fashion until I've had my fill. But for todays pizza, I'm going to start with the piece away from me, and move counter clockwise. It's not that I think the piece facing me is sub standard, or that the direction from which the slices are taken from the box will somehow affect the cooling of the cheese. But Kavey has inspired me to be different, and different I shall be. ;)
I think you all would be surprised at how different people vote different ways.
I start my vote at 5 and go up or down from there. 4, 5's and 6's are about 75% of my vote. The rest are either under of over that. I am a tough voter. It takes a technically good shot to get about 6 for me. If it is tech. good and creative than you're sure to get an 8-10 from me.
I don't use the whole 10 scale because the pictures are usually a 4, 5 or 6.
It isn't very often I will give a 1, 2 or 3. If it is perverted, way out of focus or doesn't meet the challenge then you get a 1.

I agree with your sentiments, Kavey. Just cos it's a Masters Challenge doesn't mean I am going be giving out 10's willy nilly.

There are a few on there that don't rate a five! Also there are some that rate an 8. Not many that rate a 10.

Have to agree with your sentiments, Kavey. Why should everyone expect 10's just cos its a Masters Challenge? I have voted as I usually do, those that I think deserve it, get the higher marks, those that don't...get a lower vote.

if i'm understanding correctly, you're voting on each photo relatively to the other photos in the challenge and not basing your vote on the individual merits of each photo?

To a certain extent yes, and that's how I have ALWAYS voted. There is no absolute since each challenge has it's own challenges and I vote on how well people have succeeded in the context of the other entries.
I have already tried to explain why I feel this challenge requires a shift in voting from me. I can understand you're disagreeing with that, that's totally fair enough. As for not understanding it at all, I don't know how else I can explain to clarify the WHY of it.

But, the whole point behind this challenge is that it is not the same people who submit photos to every challenge. These are supposed to be photos from 'The Masters', and as such I am holding them to a higher standard.
I expected to see truly masterful photos. Unfortunately, for the most part, I've been disappointed. Sure, there are some very nice photos, but not as many real gems as I thought there would be. In my opinion, the level of photographic and artistic excellence seen in this challenge is not much different from most of the other challenges that I've seen. To me, the only difference is that there are few, if any, amateurish snapshots.

Oh my indecisive friend, let me help you out. You should open a bottle of wine and take a better photo. Can it be reasonably said photos can be compared (assigned an ordering)? I think not, so for my part I give every photo a teetering 3, then pick the one that gets in my head and give it a 10.

Sounds like you took your own advice, at least in part ;-) My world, alas, is ordered. it's just, my rod's not fit sometimes.
