I almost always have my husband's Olympus stylus 300 with me, using my 10D mostly on scenic trips, challenges, outings where I need a good camera for low lighting situations, etc. I usually regret not having it, pretty often. So, I bought a great backpack (Lowepro) for taking it with me almost all the time.
Up until this weekend, I usually carry my little (and severly old) Kodak DC3400. I am trading it for a washing machine, of all things :) It has served me well over the years, but I outgrew it a very long time ago. It is still great for snapshots and such.
Anybody carry film cameras on their outtings? I brought my Pentax ZX-M once, but didn't snap any shots with it. I think I'll leave it at home from now on :)
My Canon Powershot S50 stays in my handbag all the time and is great for impulse pictures. It forgets it is a point & shoot and I do too. But mostly the overstuffed Lowepro, and the tripod, etc. goes along too when I know I'm shooting. Street stuff is so much easier with the S50 'cause people don't seem to notice the 'tourist' with that little camera.
I have a Coolpix 4300, and it goes everywhere with me as does my D70. The Coolpix is great for taking pictures of my D70. :)
Also, it fits in my pocket so I can take it with me and not look like a total camera geek. Good to take where I wouldn't dare take my D70 also, like on roller coasters etc.
I am still trying to figure out which to carry all the time now, my old Kodak 6440 or the new Kodak 7590. MOst of my shots are pretty much unplanned. With a purse on my shoulder all the time already, it could be hard to always have that second bag. The 6440 just stayed attached in a pouch on the strap of my purse. The 7590 isn't huge, just a tiny bit too big for the purse.
What caught my eye most in this thread, though, is the "tourist" comments. I always felt so much more "touristy" with the smaller 6440 than I think I will with the prosumer 7590. I guess I am backwards once again! LOL
I completely agree... I was sick of well meaning people asking me if I wanted them to take my photo with my Optio S, while I was composing (in my head) gritty arty shots. The FZ10 looks serious now... I don't think I get mistaken for a tourist with it.

LOL! Yes, Bob - you should have seen me at The Getty with my little point-n-shoot . . . even my husband noticed I had the most touristy camera walking around that day! LOL

The A60 is also the camera that most people want to borrow. And I let them (most times first encounter with digicam) because they produce such nice results that I can enjoy as well. :)

My next cam will be the *ist Ds from Pentax.. budget SLR.. but it's all I need. I would *LOVE* to have a backup P&S too.. but alas. They'd really start to come down in price.. like.. $150 cdn for a decent one :)
I normally haul my professional Nikon kit around most of the time. There are times and events however, where even the prospect of taking it (it really does get heavier with each passing minute) is daunting.
I now have a supply of the really cheap disposable cameras. What freedom, what joy. And I still get great pics.
I just got a cheap digital. Same thing ... no worries if it gets lost, trompled, dropped or expropriated.
Main camera: ARCA-SWISS 4x5 Field Camera (about 10-12 pounds counting everything), Rodenstock lenses, tripod, additional polaroid back w/Polaroid 54, shooting Kodak 4X5 100TMax (Black and White) for development and printing in traditional wet darkroom
1st Backup: My Sony DSC T1 (Captured about 40 images - not of prints - today while viewing prints at the Center for Creative Photography in Tucson.) Took about 70 images yesterday at my grandson's 5th birthday party. Weighs practically nothing and kept in my front right pocket.
2nd Backup: My Verizon Qualcom 3G CDMA cell phone. Weighs about the same and kept on my belt all waking hours.
3rd Backup: My Sony Clie handheld with camera included. Taken with me periodically in my briefcase.
4th - Someplace in a cupboard in my darkroom: a Nikon F6006 35mm with multiple lens. Haven't seen it in months.
I've been thinking about getting one; I used to have a Minolta DiMAGE F100, but I didn't really like it - ended up selling it to pay for part of a new lens. Whenever I have enough extra money for one, I blow it on something for my 10d.
As far as compact cameras go, I want something that EASILY fits into a shirt or pants pocket. I also don't care too much about resolution (3MP is plenty) as the camera would be something that I could take to parties and not have to really worry about losing/damaging when I am drunk.
So far, the the Kyocera FineCam SL300R and the Canon Digital Elph's are strong candidates. For now, I stick to my disposable Kodak film cameras. :)
