I think that the word choice of "botany" adds a scientific slant. If the challenge were "Plant Life" or "Flora" or a more generic term then I'd agree 100%. But I find that I'm not subtracting points for non-science, but the good science ones are scoring the best in my book.
A photo of a flower, although it may be a nice picture may not convey the science part effectively
I think the "science" part was just in the definition of what "Botany" is. The challenge was to compose a picture where plantlife was the central theme. Right????
the original idea I had for this was a scalpel, a needle, a stethascope (sic) and a tomato with a hole cut out of it and "bleeding"
It would have been called "lo-botany"

My point exactly. I read the full challenge description. I also read the title 'Botany' excuse me for suggesting that entries should probably be 'weighted' accordingly..
I am not giving 1's and 2's to the entries that show just a plant or flower, but I am adding marks for the entries that contain scientific apparatus or implication.
If the challenge was for shots of flowers it would have been:
Title: Shots of plants, flowers and green stuff'
Take a photo that has a flower or plant or anything green in it at all really...
Posting this description for the third time for those who just don't get what the challenge is about:
Botany is the science or study of plants. - blah blah blah
Capture - Go get your gun and set your wildlife traps to ensnare, or cage, or simply conquer
a well-composed image - a deep hole in the ground with water in it, which also has a musical score written on the side of the walls... I do have to include this definition of image: mental picture of something not real or present, so this means that it cannot be real, but has to be something only you can see in your mind.
that has plant life - should be a factory that has evolved into not just a thing of bricks and metal, but is now alive
as its central theme. - in other words make sure that it is exactly centered right in the middle of your photo, so to do this, just resize it down to be exactly 1 pixel in size and in the exact center, so that no one will be able to say that it is not centered.
So to summarize, be sure that your well with a musical score concerning a factory that is alive which only you can see in your mind is exactly one pixel in size and centered, with extra points for it being in a cage or a trap. :-)
Although I do love what Coolhar said about it: "A factory belching smoke with lots of busy workers scurrying around, maybe some forklifts with a little motion blur."
I sure hope this description of the challenge helps clarify what you should picture. And believe me if your picture doesn't meet my idea of the challenge, I will definitely rate you only a 1, and rant about how no one really understood the challenge.

The word 'Botany' may have been chosen as a way to get away from using 'Plant Life' or 'Green Things that Grow in the Dirt' or 'Floral'. Of course, a number of people have commented numerous times about how loose and easily interpreted a few fairly different ways several challenges have and can be. This could be one more example of a little more definition being needed for some people or a little looser interpretation by some voters.
In this challenge, I don't care if someone includes science in their image. As long as 'Plant Life' is central to the shot and it is a well composed image, it will score well. I am not providing 'extra' (nor would I deduct) points if someone includes science in their image as the challenge description defines plant life as the central theme of this challenge, not the study of plant life.

Although it could be an attempt to make people step outside of the boxes that they place themselves in. Force them to get outside of their preconcieved notions by presenting them with the results of other people's interpretations of the same ambigious definitions.
Getting hammered! (again) Started out with 6's and have had a few since, but from my scores over the day I know I'm getting a lot of 4's and definitely some threes.

Yes, the scientific aspect of the name suggests an approach that some might want to (and some have) taken. BUT, there's nothing in the challenge description that says, no flowers!
I just can't wait for "Neon" to go live with the anti-posterboard, anti-fish, anti-automobile, anti-it's not orangey-red, trolls waiting in the wings!
(BTW: FLORA= "Plants considered as a group, especially the plants of a particular country, region, or time." Which would have been much more difficult to do in a single shot competition.)
When I read the challenge .. the words "..plant life.." seemed to suggest more that just the plant (to me). I figured if they wanted us to just take pictures of plants .. then the challenge title would have been different and more importantly I dont think the word "life" would not have been in the sentence ("Capture a well-composed image that has plant life as its central theme").
Anyway .. with that said .. I've given several plain flower shots 10 ... because it appears I have read too much into the challenge (personally I dont think so, but I'm not going to judge people down b/c of my opinion).
Sorry guys, read thru all the forum and general concensus is the Botany is pictures of plants, full stop!
Don't agree, Botany is the study or science of plants and as such the challenge should depict that, so far seen only about 5 that bear that out.
Rest are Macro shots of plants.
1. Pardon, but "botany" has several definitions, as I pointed out above.
2. There's nothing wrong with general consensus. After all, that's what dictionary definitions are--how the word is used, not how itshould be used.
3. How do you take a picture of an intangible concept such as "study" or "science"?
4. Pick up any book on botany and I'm sure you'll find plenty (if not mostly) macro shots of plants (cellular structure, stages of reproductive organs, i.e. flowers, leaves, roots, etc....)
And lastly, this is like having a "human biology" challenge and saying that you should have only pictures that depict the study of human biology (dissected cadavers comes to mind) but that you can't have a picture of an eye, or lips, or any of your other favorite body parts.
(I'm done now. So go give my flower macro a 10, please.)
