I am noticing that the grey/purple folder display on the home page can be a bit flakey. At first I thought this was related to cookies, however I sometimes see a folder as grey when I haven't viewed it at all. The problem seems to be intermittent.
Currently, DPC assumes that you read all of the forum posts that you are interested in during your current session. Once your session expires (which occurs automatically once you become inactive for a certain amount of time), all posts are marked as "read". When you come back, any new posts since the last time you read any forum post are marked as "new".
During your current session, the folder colors "change" to help you keep track of which ones you've read and haven't read. But once your session expires, this "individual data" is discarded. It would take an enormous amount of resources to store which post each user has or has not read.
The current "post coloring" enhancement is a large step forward from what it used to be, and once you understand it, works quite well.
P.S. Drew fixed a bug yesterday related to the date/time of your "last read post", so the post highlighting when you start a new session should be working as originally intended. Previously, it would highlight any new posts since the start of your previous session. It now only shows those that are new since this last post you read.
- E-mail Replies to a Thread. Another way to keep track of threads of interest, any thread you mark to "E-Mail Replies" will e-mail you when someone replies to the thread....
Ths only implies notification of a reply, not an emailed reply. Is this the way it works?
Otherwise, Joel's article (and points) seem well founded.
Joel's point is interesting, but it's made less valid by the fact that this feature is only available to members -- since members pay, they typically use the site for much more than 'email replies to a thread'. Also, I'd say that while that's a valid point against the feature, it ignores the points for the feature, which I'd say certainly outweigh the former.
Bleeding marvellous! Ta very much!
LOVE the new features. Can't wait to see the DPC Prints overview. I recently posted a thread about some ideas I'd previously mentioned... didn't realise that changes were imminent!
Yup, the forum improvements are pretty awesome. I use that "watch" thingie all the time.
I have just one more little, tiny request... Can you guys write a script/code/filter doohickey that will automatically filter out bitching, whining, and/or complaining?

They have one that works sort of along those lines but could be improved with any number of their magical doohickeys... love that "ignore" feature! LOL ;o)

But if it was working, your post would never have made it to print : )
