I'm guessing the reason is that an autographed baseball is not an everyday item. A lot of people don't even see a baseball everyday, let alone one that is autographed. You picture was good, but it didn't meet the challenge. I'll bet the nine ones came from baseball players.

Many people vote pictures down for not meeting the challenge, just bear that in mind and you will get there, nothing basically wrong with your shots, just take it on the chin and carry on.

NONSENSE. You are both (dwolff and peecee) mixing up the terms "every day" and "everyday." The challenge was about everyday (common) objects, and this photo definitely met the challenge, it was easily recognizable to just about anybody. Please read and understand the challenge before voting or commenting.

Note: Autographed! I suppose a baseball autographed by Babe Ruth would an everyday item too!

Rubyred, I don't think you should quit! The voting does seem to be brutally, undeservingly low on aLOT of pictures, but the process of thinking of creative artsy photos, then practicing to get them just right can't help but make us better photographers, right? My encouragement (to myself too) is to do it for myself -- and not worry too much what cranky over-critical voters think. I've just joined, and have entered 3 challenges, I've learned a lot from the constructive comments, but what I'm learning too is that a lot of people LOVE what other people may HATE, so it has to be just about making it a tool to practice and get better at making pictures that WE are proud of. I hope you hang in there.
Even though I didn't give you a high score I agree with sandyp. Your picture was great, as are the others I saw under your profile. You don't have to win a blue ribbon to be a good photographer. Several in the site favorites area didn't place at all. Just because myself and few others were nit-picking doesn't mean that we didn't like you photo. Wouldn't you rather show us up with the next challenge?
My $.02 Probably over neat imaged a little, and not all that artistic/nice to look at. I'd have still probably given it a 5. I think maybe you tried a little too hard to meet the challenge also.

Looks like the initial voters are quick to dismiss off everything.. I really thought the my current entry is way better than the last two and deserved a 5 or a 6.. will see what happens.

I think you may have suffered from the title. A "Jim Thome Autographed Baseball" isn't an everyday item. Had you titled it simply "Baseball" it might have done a little better.
I don't pay much mind to the title, occasionaly I may give bonus points for a clever or appropriate title, but who knows how everyone else thinks.

Submit again! I don't understand these 1, 2, and 3 voters. For a good, well taken pic like yours, I would never go to the basement for scores. I like the photo, but I admit the thought did cross my mind that an autographed ball becomes extraordinary as soon as it is signed. The ordinary ones come without the value added signatures. You can say it is splitting hairs, but when you submit an extraordinary ball to an ordinary challenge, you run the risk that some will lowball the picture of your ball. Anyway, I hope you'll look at the positive side. Several people gave your pic 8, 9, and 10 scores. I looked through your previous entries, too. I like a lot of them and I noticed that twice people have selected your photos as favorites. IMHO, it is best to enjoy the satisfaction of knowing that you connected with some people and ignore the fact that some people will not take a photo the way you meant it.

Go for it. Most of us are turned off by picking at feet, so you're safe. Although with all the other feet, you might still get trampled.
Regarding titles... this IS a photo challenge, but titles are a part of the entry and worth putting some effort into. Some people don't even look at the titles, but they can often add an extra twist or insight into your shot. How do you think this would have been scored in the Fear challenge without the title?
I didn't vote on the everyday object challenge, but I honestly wouldn't have scored the baseball shot much higher. As a collectible, an autographed baseball is special, and your photograph emphasizes the autograph. An interesting composition with an ordinary baseball would have fared better.
Nearly everyone on this site has been depressed or humiliated by the results at some point, but the rest of the group doesn't point fingers and laugh. I certainly have, and I've seen it recently with CrabAppl3, BobsterLobster, GriGriGirl and EddyG- all among the top photographers here IMO. The best revenge is to learn as much as possible, use your imagination, and gradually build success. It WILL happen, and you'll feel much better for sticking with it. Good luck!
Whenever I take a licking as I have with several challenges, I make sure to redirect my emotions to making a better picture. Try it, you will like it. The object is to learn and many of us, even the best fall on their ears. But you never hear negative complaints from these people.
They just can't wait to erase the bad memory.
Ummmmmmm. . . SCalvert, that picture would score a 10+ if it were titled "Leisurely Day at the Park". I'm new, so I didn't get to see it when it was submitted. What an incredible picture. My first love is taking pictures of landscapes & wildlife, so that one would have been one of my favorites for sure! I love it!
my personal best is a 5.7 for a picture i shot mindlessly in auto mode but who cares... ???
I have a job taking photos and it takes me to places like Saipan, Guam, Hawaii and next 2 weeks im off to Samoa so allthough i get a beating here I get a big fat pay-check and more work because someone out there likes my work..
Ruby - I understand about getting a beating here for your hard work and it hurts like hell, but keep smiling my friend and never give up just because of a few MORONIC voters and personal opinions from some people here, its the internet, I love your work and your concepts, never do it for others pleasure, do it because YOU enjoy it and don't worry about scores or opinions. I try of cause to do well but I also know that I can never please everyone BUT.... I CAN please the most important person.....ME.
Oh. . and I forgot to say: "Thank You" for that encouragement that everyone, even the top photographers have gotten trampled and been humiliated at some point. I'm having that happen with the Macro entry. I didn't really understand what qualified as a macro, and thought it was just a good close-up, so my picture is getting trampled, and I'm counting the hours till August 8th when the voting is over and that challenge is behind me. I still really like my picture, but in this challenge, it's doing terrible because it didn't meet the challenge. But you're right. I'm living (dying actually) and learning :)

It's unquestionably a fabulous photo, but the challenge topic was "Fear." Since there's no obvious fear shown by the animal, using the title "Fearless" provided a more direct connection to the challenge. Had the title just been "Goat," then more people might have been inclined to think "Great shot, but it doesn't meet the challenge."
