Sorry, convincing the 300+ people that vote on your photo that you met the challenge for the week is part of the challenge. If you marginally meet the challenge, your score will reflect it. Fact of DPC.
I could see people arguing a flower either way, so if you submit a flower, it won't score well. Most people don't consider people or pets as "objects" so you will not score well if you submit one of those. There are only about 99 billion objects in this world that people use/see/touch... everyday. it shouldn't be hard to meet the challenge on this one. If all else fails, take a picture of a well lit fork.

ellamay, you have been far too kind. People, I am absolutely shocked to hear people say that a flower doesn't count as an everyday object, or that people or animals don't count because they aren't "objects." Some of you, while grasping at straws to get the point, are really missing the entire point. Just because YOU don't "use" an "object" every day, doesn't mean that the photographer doesn't. If you live in NYC, and flowers are rare to you, doesn't mean that the flower doesn't count as an everyday object. To say that your definition of an everyday object is the only "correct" one, and to even vote that way, is a phenomenal demonstration of arrogance. Of course, I've said that in many other threads about many other challenges, and you all keep handing out the "doesn't meet my itty bitty tiny constricted pre-determined unflexible challenge definition, and I'm not willing to admit that there is a world outside of my tiny head" comments. Good luck in the challenge, all.

If I called my wife an object she'd kick my ass, thus people are not objects. I believe animals deserve the same courtesy.
Because we see flowers in every single challenge, I doubt a flower shot would do well. If you can't think of an object other then a person, animal or flower, you need to get out of the house.
As was said, thread like these are for defining the topic, since all too oftem they are left far too general. But they are also for spurring ideas.
The challenge discription does not say to just photograph an object. It says, "Take a common, everyday object that most anybody would recognize and use it as the focal point of an interesting photographic composition." That part about 'that most anybody would recognize,' has it's own significance to the challenge, and any shot that does not meet that part of the challenge should be voted low.
As far as what an object is, I take a very wide view of that; An object is anything that is made of matter, in any of its forms and shapes. This includes rocks, chairs, pets and children -- and yes it even includes water (hello all you water drop people out there). By the way, a flower is a living thing so it would not be considered an inanimate object (if you choose to limit yourself in that fashion) -- unless of course you are thinking of a dead flower (ehwww).
Especially when the challenge discription says, 'that most anybody would recognize and use,' it is good to get a feel for what types of objects others in this global community view as common and ordinary.

Yeah, you're right. I should've figured someone would jump on that. ;) But somehow I see a difference between calling an animal an object and calling a flower an object -- the absence of emotions or soul I guess.
Anyway, this is way too esoteric and I swear I'm not that harsh of a judge when it comes to meeting the theme so I don't know why I'm stating an opinion on this before the challenge even starts! It just seems like the theme would be truly intended for stuff like keys, forks, shoes, toothbrushes, hammers.... true objects. But go forth and stretch the theme to its limits fellow dpc'ers. Nothing wrong with that1
I don't think kids or pets are objects. I'm a kid, and being called an object isn't nice. Also, I don't see your kids everyday, so they are not recognisable to me :P I don't think any of you parents would like to be called objects would you? :)
Everyone better brace themselves because I got a pic in mind that will definitely get comments. Maybe even beat the 68 comments I got for Words challenge. muhhh ahahaahaha
i think the whole aguement here is because in EVERY challenge somebody puts up a picture of a kid or a flower and says it fits the challenge. I bet you there will be about a dozen flower pics and a dozen kid pics. i don't think those are very creative "objects", so i will rate them lower.
and about the whole "object" thing, its called an object because it is a series of shapes that exist within the frame. not that anybody is disregarding the blood that flows through your veins or the thoughts you have in your mind, but to the camera, you are about as important as the chair you are sitting in right now. but, to the eye, that shape must be placed in an aesthetically pleasing way to the picture taker.
Let's just get some photos in the challenge and the votes will automatically decide if the photo is right or not. I bet if its a great picture even of a shadow, it will still get great votes (whatever if a shadow is an object or not)

You are an object, you do exist, you can be touched (but not where your bathing suit covers unless by a doctor or until you are much older), you can be seen, you do occupy space, you, as a group, kids, are seen every day. I don't see how you can say it isn't nice. It's neither nice or bad. You seem to be placing some strange value judgement on the word.
I took a couple photos and realized my object wasn't REALLY the FOCUS of them.

Hmmmm...."that most anybody would recognize". Well I think it only fair to take into consideration patients with mental disorders or closed head injuries and have complete loss of memory. They would obviously recognize nothing, so therefore, if someone entered anything in the challenge, it would not fit the challenge. So when voting, if I see anything anyone has entered, I can comment doesn't fit challenge for this depicts something, give it a 1 and go on to look for nothing and give that high votes because it isn't anything.
ps. oh and I'll apologize now because I'm sure somebody without a life or a sense of humor will start ranting about the political incorrectness of bringing up mental disorders...(don't know the current pc term for it)
