And Thomas Newman is the guy who wrote the soundtracks for both American Beauty and Erin Brokovich

Absolutely, positively without a doubt best soundtrack ever: Amelie.

Another good one is trainspotting, but not nearly as much as Amelie.

Oh yes indeed. Great choices - as is Lawrence of Arabia.

Betty Blue was good too - another Sakamoto (with David Sylvian - Forbidden Colours): 'Merry Christmas, Mr Lawrence'.

Crossroads; great blues sound track
but to get the guitar finale you have to get Steve Vai:The
Elusive Light and Sound Vol.1
La Bamba;Carlos Santana rifts all the way through it.

Thomas Newman's music walks on air. Profound and has a light atmospheric depth to it. Example's: Meet Joe Black, American Beauty, Scent Of A Woman, The Shawshank Redemption and Road to Perdition.

I'm not a big Tom Cruise fan, but I have to reiterate Top Gun, also Cocktail.

What about the Disney movies, Beauty and the Beast, Little Mermaid, Lion King (Even older, my mind just started singing R.E.S.C.U.E. Rescue Aid Society...).

Or how could you forget something like "White Christmas"

Some good choices so far...
How about Bernard Herrmann's scores for Hitchcock films like North by northwest or Psycho + lots of others.
Also Lalo Schifrin for Mission: Impossible, Bullit, Dirty Harry, Eagle has Landed etc etc
