I'm looking for the best online source for legally downloading music. Does anyone here have any experience with the online vendors? Do you have any suggestions as to which service is best and why?
Cheap is good! But what about the quality of the sound? When played on something other than computer speakers? Is it even possible to burn an play the music elsewhere (stereo, car, etc.)?
Kaaza Lite is really good it has a licensing fee to use it but once it's paid you get unlimited downloads. I've never used it but I have a friend who uses it all the time.
Also your local radio station...call the dj and ask for the song, often they will send you the song in MP3 format if you call and ask.

Kazaa Lite is free, and not legal for downloading music. It's an adware free version of Kazaa, and is hard to find because Kazaa has sued them. iTunes has great quality music as long as your on Windows or Mac, and you can burn to CD as much as you want. Whatever you do, don't pay for Kazaa lite, or you'll just be paying to download illegal music. Plus with the RIAA lawsuits, Kazaa is scarce for music now.

I took a brief look at this site. I coulnd't figure out how to 'search' for artist/titles. Can you take a look on that site for a group called "Celestial Navigations"? I'm looking for four CDs by them and haven't had much luck....
You can support independent artists by visiting //music.download.com/ (the successor to MP3.com, and now owned by cNet).
You should find free (legal) downloads and paid ones as well. I haven't uploaded any of mine yet ... I had some at MP3.com but have to migrate it over.

i checked and i don't see anything by them. i'll keep checking, though...hundreds of new titles available every day.

I never paid for Kazaa Lite. Tons of other crap comes with downloading music and videos, etc...my co-m-p-ooo-t-er barely runs now. I took it in for work and I was told it was because of all the downloading my roomates were doing. Lots of little programs come with downloads and I was told they were all competing to run at the same time hence the laaaaaaaag. Just be careful!
I downloaded an album from walmart.com. I now have a batch of WMA files that I can't seem to burn to a CD that will play in a regular CD player. They have this digital rights management encryption or something. Can music downloaded this way only be played on a computer?

I use iTunes...it works fine for me. I listen to the CDs on the stereo and in the car. I've only downloaded one song from walmart, but it burned OK as well. But that was a while back, when they first started.

This will allow you to convert to MP3 or to whatever format/compression level you want. after that, burn as you will.
