Trillian - consolidates all major IM networks under one application (and you can add all sorts of plug-ins as well such as weather, rss feeds, etc...)
I prefer gaim. Same concept, but open source (and therefore totally free). No constant prodding to upgrade to Trillian Pro, etc. Highly recommended for anybody who uses all the ad-laden chat stuff like AIM, Yahoo Messenger, MSN, etc. Also supports jabber, IRC, ICQ, etc.
Since I stumbled upon the free internet browser Avant, I have never wished for anything else. It's tabbed in itself, so no more overloaded taskbars, it remembers the pages you had open when you shut down your browser, there is an very good pop-up blocker and search-bar (you can choose google if you want), and you can customise it a lot, but also just make it look like explorer. There are a lot of other niceties (forward en backward with combinations of your mousebuttons, open in a new page with middle button or wheel, etc etc). It's based on the explorer-source, so no compatibility-issues with windows.
really, try it. Everyone I showed it has switched and never wants anything else anymore.
Just downloaded this and giving it a whirl, all my favourites etc are there by default. Seems nice and light, have installed Roboform too.
I use Internet Explorer right now at home. However, I'm all but fed up with never-ending security issues. Seems like every time I turn around, I see patches from Microsoft that say something like "Terrorists are using your computer right now to take over the free world. Install this patch."
I only use I.E. for browsing. I use Outlook Express for email, and AIM for instant messaging, and I'm not likely to change either of those. But, I'm seeking an alternative for browsing the web. OK, truth be told, it will mostly be used for hanging out at DPC and in the DPC

Firefox? What are the distinct advantages? Can I transfer my I.E. settings (favorites, etc) directly to either of these?

Edit: Oh yeah, what about my cookies? Will I have to re-enter all my passwords at every site I visit if I switch?
I used to use only IE and could not see all the photo on DPC. I recently downloaded Moxilla {sp} Firefox and now I can see all the photo on DPC plus got into a new site that I couldn't with IE I am very happy with it

Just so that you are aware, Avant is simply a different front end into IE, and as such is still vulnerable to all the same exploits. Make sure you keep up to date with IE patches if you're going to use it.

TABBED IM'ING?!?! I'M SOOO THERE! but wait...where are my RSS feeds??? can i get rss through gaim? just browsed the site and didnt see anything right off...i need to keep up with my slashdot, wired, and ars technica news :)
Also, I didn't download any extensions at all. None seemed really necessary when I looked at them. Maybe a quick survey - for you Firefox users, what extensions do you have that you find to be really useful, and why?
I installed the viewIE extension mentioned earlier in this thread, that allows you to open a specific page in IE with just a right-click. Only need that for a few non-standard pages, but the extension finally allows me to get rid of the IE icon in my toolbar :-)
I will never return to pop-up and bugs hell in IE.
I have been using Mozilla/Firefox for a long time now, and I will never go back. Correctly rendered pages, better CSS support, popup and spyware blocking and does not crash on simple pages. (Don't click there if you are using IE, it crashes)
Plus, you can get nice things like Web Developer, Adblock and Bookmark Syncronizer.

My problem is sorta the opposite of Crafty Sue's, I could see the whole image (640 pixel height) in IE but can't quite get all of it in Firefox. Is there a way to get the top bars contracted into one like I could in IE? or do you have to surrender the Status bar to see 640 without scrolling in Firefox?
I think I'm going to like this browser but haven't got it set up the way I want it yet. What are the advantages of tabbed browsing? At first glance it seems similiar to using mutiple windows.
Firefox ROCKS! To hear someone describe it, tabbed browsing might not sound like a big deal. But believe me, once you get used to it you'll never want to turn back. I also like the built-in ability to block pop-ups. Although I've never done any real time comparisons, it seems much faster than IE.

trying it out for the last couple of days - I get a lot of 'this is not an xbel file' errors - I've had it work correctly about one time so far.
Firefox is excellent. Thunderbird also gives Outlook a run for its money, and, in my opinion, beats it soundly about the ears. The 'learning' junk mail filter is very usefully adaptable.

Have you tried the Import option from the File drop-down menu? It worked for me to get all my Favorites from IE. They are sorted differently though.

It works very nicely for me. It is not perfect, but works for us who have more than one computer.
SwitchProxy Tool - Great if you use multiple proxies - toolbar button to switch proxy painlessly and quickly. I use this at least twice every day on VPN connections.
Scribe - good for people who post to forums too much - lets you save/ load in to web forms (like this entry box)
