What is the time limit on when it's safe to delete old originals? Seems unfair to ask for validation weeks after the challenge has ended.
just curious, why on earth would you ever delete an original file?
I really have no use for most of what I shoot for DPC. To be quite honest I don't even like most of the images I submit here.
I really would like to see a validation time limit. How about 30 days? Seems fair.
"Fair" doesn't seem to me to be relevant. We have a simple rule that all entries are subject to validation, and an original is required for that. It can't be that great a burden to archive two files.
I can't reveal don't remember any specifics, but we've had a situation where one validation investigation led to a review of earlier entries, revealing a pattern which resulted in something more than the simple DQ of the initiating image. As one of those responsible for making sure the challenges are "fair" I think it's necessary that we be able to validate any image any time.

I have no problem with the validation rule.
I also have no problem with validating ALL the images in the challenge.
I do have a problem with waiting weeks then asking for a validation of an ugly image that ended up near the back page.
It's the lack of a time limit. Do you really think it's necessary to validate an image from a challenge that ended in November of 2015?
I do like the way Mr Bearman presents the DQ's with a bit more information and a personal touch.
It should be taken further, IMHO. Take for example this DQ of mine, for the Technically Flawed challenge. Bear wrote:
"One of the former 2nd place images has been DQ'd because it was taken a day too early; the photographer counted wrong :-( "
I would like to see the DQ's written in the following vein:
One of the former undeserving 2nd place images has been DQ'd because it was taken by a rank amateur with no work-pride, a day too early; the photographer should be whipped to within an inch of his life as he admitted he counted wrong :-(

I did a quick overview of this thread, I hope I didn't miss my question.
My question is on archival. Afer a certain point I try to format my memory cards.
I would like to participate in archival challenges but I am not sure how to resubmit the original if requested.
I copy my files from the memory card to my hard drive using the operating system's "drag-and-drop" method first. Then I edit a copy of that file; the original remains on the hard drive (and later on backup -- another HD, CD/DVD, or USB stick). I don't erase from the camera card until this transfer is complete.
The file copied from the card to the hard drive should still be an "original" unless you use other software to copy from the card to the hard drive; those can sometimes introduce other data making it impossible to determine the original date.

Yep. I do the same and keep a standalone external drive for storing original files. I make sure NOT to touch that with other software programs (i.e. Lightroom or Paint Shop Pro) when doing key-wording for archival purposes.

I do recall that both they and I suspected at least some voters would vote it down because they thought the text had been added in post and was illegal. In this case, the validation was requested and revealed as early in the voting process as possible as a courtesy to me. I appreciated that fact - even though the image and/or presentation was obviously lousy and the entry finished well down in the field.
Thank you for the info. I have to take my computer off my cloud only use it for images and add a hard drive for validation as you all mentioned. I also have to organize LR better.
Most of my experience was with film. I am not computer savvy at all, but... I really want to learn!

When we see type added to a Standard Editing challenge we usually ask for proof for the reasons Nam described. Plus, of course, if the type WAS added in post then we get a chance to practice our booting technique :-)
