I have read several comments that said basically that the submission size offers them the best way to judge a photo.

I might disagree here. Have you thought about photos that depend on the composition to form a flow around the photo that is apparent when you step back from the photo?

A thumbnail is like stepping back from a wall that has a photo on it..allowing you to see some elements that wer not apparent from another distance.

Imagine an impressionist painting seen only form about 2 feet away versus 10 feet, 20 feet.

Just giving you something to think about :-)

In some cases yes this is true. But some photographs are about seeing texture and detail that you can't see in a thumbnail. I would be opposed to allowing anyone to vote on photographs just from thumbnails. Sorry if I offend anyone with this statement but, if you have a slow connection and you can't deal with loading up all the images, move on to something else. I don't want someone to be voting who is only going to half ass view the photograph.

i use both. i think if a photo only works when it's immersive, i.e. BIG, then it's probably not the best photo.

also, if it only works when it's viewed tiny, but up close heavily flawed, that's not desirable either.

good point to bring up, tho ... : )

Our thumbnails are automatically generated by a server script, and their image quality cannot be guaranteed.

On a different note, there are at least 2 or 3 images in this challenge that I think look amazing in their thumbnail versions but not in their full-size ... mostly because of detail and focus. Shrinking a photo to 150 wide will make just about any photo seem in focus, even though I definitely think that's a pretty crucial element to a photograph.

I think with the current system, we kind of leave it up to the user to step back 10 feet if that's where they think art looks best :)

I am not talking about connection speed......

We have said it a million times here so here comes a million and one.

The limited size here, peoples inclination to get their face right up on something to scrutinize it whatever else you can imagine is not the only way to experience something.

If I have to say more than that I can''t explain it anymore than to ask you to go to an exhibit and try it for yourself.

If you have never been to an art exhibit it makes it even more difficult for me to explain it to you.

Yes drew...I am not saying that thumbnails expose all. What I am saying is there may be many layers to a photo, painting, multi-media that get lost at a specific distance. I understand their limitations and agree. Just talking about the various ways to see stuff is all :-)
