Another cruise, Lydia? I guess you either like them or you don't. Not to stOMP down cruises but I was on one back in the 60s and it was a veritable nightmare, the last cruise for Yarmouth, sister ship to the Yarmouth Castle which burned and sank in '65. On the way back from Nassau we encountered a storm and the ship was listing really bad, you could hear dishes crashing and deck chairs flying. I'm just glad we made it back. No more cruises for me, besides I don't drink and that's all they do on those ships.
The storm was in the middle of the night, long after dinner. It was horrific. The ship was only half full due to the bad reputation of that cruise line. One of the crew told me about his experience on the Yarmouth Castle after it caught fire, trying to save people who were severely burned which only added to the already negative aura of this cruise. The Yarmouths are now GHOst ships that changed history.
I emailed you some details of my experiences on the Yarmouth Cruise Ship. I think we were navigating 10-12 ft swells on the way back which accounts for all the broken dishes and deck chairs strewn all over. That was my iNTRoduction to cruising.. not a good impression.
Ending up in a life raft without a GLImmer of hope would have been the worst ending to this particular cruise. As it was, I did make it back okay and able to focus on the highlights. Shopping in Nassau was fun and the Black Cat Club was a gas.
I cAN'T beat that story, though I was once on a school field trip on a sailing ship in the SANTa Barbara Channel where we got to see flying fish. Of course, I've taken pictures of ANTs too ...
REWind on the flying fish.. saw them in a SE Florida inland waterway while kayaking. Fortunately, none landed inside the boat or I would have freaked. BTW.. what happened to Lydia, isn't this her thread? hmm
I used to live on ALMshouse Road. No real significance other than the letters fit. As for playing scales.. are they fish scales or the scales you use to weigh stuff like produce? (just joshing)
Lydia is definitely a ribbon hog .. she's definitely passed the stage of wearing a graduation gOWN .. she should teach her OWN talents to us lesser mortals ..
I had a friend in S Florida named Lidia which is the Spanish version of Lydia. She was from Cuba and great COMpany.. very smart and achievement oriented, a go-getter.
Lidia was breaking barriers in the insurance industry, she wanted to become an agent. This was back in the 80s when women were considered inferior to men in most industries. It's a little beTTEr now but still needs improvement.
HAVIng no ambition anymore... I am still proud of my job well done, out-earning many men (including my Hubby) when I was first starting off in the computer industry in the 80's.
I think the pay is much more equal for men and women than the media portrays.
What did you do in the computer industry.. did you write code? The 80s were a major turning point in the industry. ExTRA emphasis was placed on the World Wide Web.
I was not AMAzing at it, but... I did a pretty good job at technical support with software and hardware... back when computers took up an entire room and required a separate a/c unit to cool said room. Ha!
I recall those days when Power Macs could be bought at the local Sears store. I used to set up new desktop units for people. Stuff had to be rECHarged and programmed. I worked in JavaScript and wrote my own animated GIFS. And that was in the 80's!!!!
