Sony f*cked me royally on stereo equipment some years back. Plus, I got it from them again during the days of their PS2 debacle. I have heard that their customer service is still pretty bad. I will not buy Sony again.

I have one and that is a super cheap great camera! You can choose to buy vintage lenses as well (there's plenty of them out there). Super small and the kit lens (16-50) you risk to forget it somewhere since both are VERY small. Sony has the most advanced system (Sony is the only one - if we don't consider the super expensive Leica - full frame mirrorless system) but Fuji and Olympus have great cameras. IMO the best deal is A6000, no doubt. If you want to go full frame, all the A7 series is amazing, especially the last ones, A7RII and A7SII, but not cheap stuff.
I am usually using a Micro 4/3 olympus these days. Very convenient size and image quality is better than my Canon DSLR's (50D and Rebel T2i). I can carry in on my bicycle in a handlebar bag, though it won't fit in a jersey pocket. Since you ride motorcycles, you may appreciate the small size for the same reason I do.
I do miss the viewfinder at times, but I'll eventually get a digital one that clips on the hotshoe.

Only Canon makes crap worse than Nikon mirrorless cameras, even if I've been told that some of those Nikons has a SUPER autofocus.
Perhaps someday the "big two" will get their act together on mirroless... sigh.
FWIW, I would take an EOS M3 any day over the Nikon 1 series. The Canon has an APS-C sensor, nearly three times the area of the Nikon. Now, Canon sensors are lagging a bit in technology, but not nearly enough to offset a 3x advantage in area. One thing I gotta give the Nikon is, I love the retro look.

I know what you mean. I was just making fun of Canon. I always love bigger sensors, but this EOs M is a real camera without heart, it has no future, while Nikon 1 cameras can be used in specific areas, incredible burst, super autofocus and that sensor crop can be useful in some particular areas of photography. But of course both photography giants NEED better mirrorless systems, no doubt.
He Jeb, tell me more about why you're thinking about going mirrorless. Or maybe to put it another way, why you want a walkaround camera. Maybe all you have to do is upgrade your phone. I sense a story.
Oly m43 yield same quality as an APSC DSLR - they are pretty impressive. The EM-10 is discounted and sells for $500 with kit lens (real good quality) and you can add a 40-150 zoom (300mm equiv) for another $100. Offers same retro look as the J1 you are considering, even better. With very nice collection of awesome primes to grow into the future, i'd give it serious thought:

Rumor is that the new Olympus PEN cameras will have a built in view finder. Also, some f 1.0 primes on the way. Stay tuned...
BTW the OM-D series from Olympus all have built-in EVFs - and very nice high resolution ones. With the prices of gen 1 OMDs equal to or lower than PEN models, i'd pick it over any PEN.

coupled with: Pany 14-140mm lens will give you smallness and simplicity with an almost identical focal range of your Nikon setup. While the lens is slow and you lose light gathering going to a 4x smaller sensor it does have optical image stabilization in the lens, just make sure the lens IS is compatible with the Oly Air.
There are 2.8 zooms as well but without the long zoom reach.
Yes. Maybe go the cheap route like I did? I found mine at a pawn shop for $250, including the 14-45 and 45-150. Will probably buy the 14-150 in the future to give myself a single lens solution.
As for Sony a6000 I find it strange that it does not have a touch screen. It makes selecting focus points and navigating menus harder/slower. Also reviewing photos - panning/zooming are natural with a touch screen. EOS M has a great touch screen and so does OLY OMD cameras. I've also heard that the Sony models that have the touch screen does not allow menu navigation via touch - seems like Sony is not embracing this technology whole heartedly...
