great shots....congrats. just want to clear something up for you. as to why the lightning would come out regardless of shutter speed or aperture. lighting is a direct light source and any camera, any time will record a direct light source...for example, u can be in pitch darkness with one lightbulb on in a room and although the room will remain dark with an exposure of say...1/60 @ f8, the lightbulb will record.
your approach at 15 @ 3.5 was a great choice. did u maintain that thruout the shoot? or did u bracket different shots?

I used shutter priority at 15 seconds for all of the shots. I did start off at ISO 200 but changed that to ISO 100 after just a few shots.
