The APO version is a bit more expensive but is has alot better image quality in all aspects. The APO version has a red ring at the front of the lens but the DL version does not.
EDIT: Durrll... he´s referring to that Canon L lenses such as the Canon 70-200L f/2.8 IS USM has a red ring at the front of the lens :)
It seems that most if not all Canon L lenses have a red ring

I could be wrong, but I think the Super Macro II lets you use macro from 200-300mm focal lengths and the Super Macro forces you to use 300 mm for macro.

sound ok, thanks. As long as it doesn't weigh 3lb more and is a foot longer that doesn't bother me :)
On a DSLR there's no 'macro mode' like on a digicam. It's all about minimum focusing distance. Just look at the specs and find the minimum focusing distance. For instance, the 28-105 I have says 'macro' on the side, only because the minimum focusing distance is 1.5 feet from the film plane. At 105mm I can get fairly close to something and still focus on it, but it still won't give a 1:1 magnification like a dedicated macro lens will.
My ignorance is gonna show for a second... When you say in 'macro mode' is that a setting on the lens or the cameras so called macro setting?
This is a setting on the lens itself. It allows closer focusing distance. Normally the minimum focusing distance is 1.5meters but with the macro setting on the minimum focusing distance is approx. 0.95meters.
Well... I forked out £170 and got it. It's a very good lens for the money. The zoom is superb. Problem is though it needs good light so you can shoot at high speeds of above 200 to avoid blured photos. Will try it at manchester airport to see what's like. I can spy on my neighbours now!
Can you please tell me something. I have bought the same lens to go with my new D70. I have experienced problems with the macro switch. It will go on macro mode fine but when it comes to switch it back to normal it won't. You have to mess with either AF all the way out and then in to get it unlocked or manualy zoom in/out.
In other forums I found more people with this glitch. Do you experience the same? Other than this small thing I think the lens is a fantastic value for money especially for beginners like me. It even came with a nice zipped bag to store it in.
Very happy the images are great. Havingprobs holding the camera steady at 200+ zoom though!
Turning off macro, I just set the camera to manual focus or shut it off and flip the switch.
As far as hand held over 200mm, I'm just too damn shakey. Use a tripod. :-)
