I didn't choose a subject that represents the concept of 'newness' and I wonder if that is why so far my photo is at 4.85. Of course it is early on. At first it was at 5 but then someone else voted and it dropped. I don't think it deserves less than a five, personally, but I'm a bit biased I guess. ;D

If voters read the challenge rules they should realise that the image does indeed not need to represent newness ..... just be something new for the photographer to take etc. Unfortunately I imagine a lot of people will look at an image and go "that doesn't look new to me" and vote photos incorrectly down.
As for the voting Melissa ... you can't see exact votes. It is more typically a case of people watching their initial votes closely and working out what score they were just given to change their average by sucn 'n such an amount.
I actually voted pretty generously for this challenge mostly because of the openess of the challenge guidelines. I haven't gotten around to too many comments though.
Well I had the question of what does one expect to see in this challenge. But after reading this forum I had my question answered :). I really "was" excited about the image I submitted in this challenge, but...as always when I feel I have a real good shot, perfectly edited, great lighting, good subject matter, I close my eyes now to peek at the first few votes. I can always tell how its going to end by my first few votes. And as usual I am disappointed. I am sitting at a 5.6. Oh well..I hoped everyone would read the guidelines and realize its a "whats new territory for you" challenge. I do not know what really makes people happy when it comes to a "good" shot,composition, editing, subject matter? I hope to figure it out someday.
I think voting will be a challenge. I've voted on 2 images but I looked at all the entries. A lot of really good entries but there's really no way of telling if they were taken from a place that the photographer had never taken a picture before which is the challenge requirement (including mine). How is the voter supposed to know?
Anyway there are some images that show some kind of newness (whatever that means).
I guess you really can't tell if the person has ever photographed in that spot before. This site seems to give out alot of low votes. I don't know if people vote on if they like the image more than they do for technical aspects. Personally, I look for technical first then decide on if I like the image overall and average that score for their vote. Currently sitting at 4.9 so I guess that isn't too bad considering this is only my second challenge and I'm relatively new to photography period.
I've given quite a few high scores. Gotta say I've given some low ones also, mostly for technical, not because I don't like the image. Anyway, good luck to everyone. There ARE some awesome images in this challenge.
I think it is impossible for the voter to know if its new to the photographer. That is why I am keeping a "free study" attitude while I vote. I am voting on the quality of the shot itself and not wondering if it was new to the photographer who shot the image.
"Shoot something you have never entered before" you might have never tried a specific technique before, haven't taken an action shot, haven't taken a landscape shot, its something new to you, so this is the right challenge for it.

But who else would know at this point that it's the photographer's first time to do it? There are landscape shots there (and really great shots too). Guess I just have to trust the photog that it was new.
So yeah, I'm beginning to realize I might just vote on the technical aspect of the entry.
As there is indeed absolutely no way anyone could possibly tell if the photo style/location/whatever is new to an anonymous photographer, I think everyone needs to assume the photographer has been honest and, as others have said, vote as if an open challenge.
I do wonder what will happen though if someone wins a ribbon for their flower (or whatever) shot and then people see that person always takes photos of flowers. Hopefully that simply won't happen :)

You could always make a requirement for this challenge that they send a notarized letter stating their name and address. If indeed it comes up that they ribbon with a subject they shoot often then we'll secretly set a date to all show up at their home and throw pudding at them.
