This one confuses me. How is it possible to stumble upon a discovery, on accident, and record it? You could take any kind of picture basically, and use it as Serendipity. Argh! I have an idea, but not too sure it would work. blah!
Actually, as John Setzler hinted in that thread, Serendipty might not be the classic definition I was thinking of. For photographic purposes, serendipity would include spotting something great in your image that you hadn't noticed when you shot itor a surprise intruder like this one...

It may not be what Kavey had in mind, but I think John Setzler's idea of what serendipity means is the closest anyone has got.
I'm not really convinced one can go out looking for serendipity for a challenge - this is one where one really would be better off going back through old photos. I doubt I'll be entering either.
Exactly what I was thinking, Sher. Nice shot- and tough to replicate in a week without staging it. This is a Challenge that will get a wide range of scores with a low average. Even those that 'get' the concept may breeze through the photos and not notice the surprise.
It's funny, really. This was the challenge I thought I didn't stand a chance of entering, yet a day later I'm sitting with a series of pictures, struggling to choose one to enter. I'm not sure how people would vote on them, but they are photos I'm unlikely to ever get a chance to repeat, so to me they fit the challenge.
Now if I could just come up with a Silhouette shot that I like...
My dad had an idea but I wasn't able to carry it out... I don't have anyone to help play my subject! Anyway.. it was a person standing in a long line to a baseball game or movie theater, a box of cracker jacks in their hands, pulling out a ticket to a movie or baseball game. If only cracker jack prizes were that good!
Better yet, if a "sold out" sign were up, I suppose, though that's pushing it a bit. Anyway. That was the idea. I thought it was cute.

What I was trying to say was that to me it was about creating an image that represented serendipity (hence the word represent included in the description) rather than the unlikely event that something serendipitous would actually happen during the week and could be recorded by the camera.
BUT IT DOESN'T MATTER WHAT I MEANT ANYWAY - I'M JUST ONE VOTER AMONGST ALL THE REST AND MY INTENDED INTERPRETATION HOLDS (QUITE RIGHTLY) NO SWAY WHATSOEVER.
