warning to all check the date on your camera
My camera was stolen 3 weeks ago and while searching for reviews on a replacment I found this site and joined
I had what I thought was good idea for the Strength challenge but no camera. So I borrowed a friends camera for a few hours to do the shoot. I had a quick look at the date (13th April) but did not notice that they had not set the year and it was 03 not 04
while I'm not happy I had read the rules and understand my being DQed
the bad part was my Photo was doing well @ 5.9021 and rising after 143 votes with 19 good coments
this makes me more determind to get my new camera and enter more challenges
but I will be checking the date before every photo I take

ps. my Photo is still up in the challenge and After 147 votes it is still rising 5.9252 I wonder if it would have made it to a 6 :)
The photo in question was accidentally DQd, as has been re-instated. However, the site council are currently discussing the legality of the particular shot, so it might still be DQd (again).
Keith, That's harsh. Torn between 'dems d'rules' and 'ahh come on'! Don't suppose you have a recent copy of the national paper in the background do you? ;) I too am intrigued to know which one was yours...
What does accidentally DQ'ed mean? Was it ousted because the photog accidentally had the wrong year in the cam's date, or did some SC member accidentally put it out before an official determination was reached? Site Council works in such mysterious ways.
Is the image EXIF data automatically read with each submission? If so, then the totally missing data from the images I have submitted must default to "acceptable"!
It's my understanding --------- that it's random. Beyond that I know nothing ---------- I think if they tell their 'secret ways' they have to shoot ya!

It was "accidentally" DQ'd because the DQ interface isn't nearly as nice and polished as the "public facing" stuff. So it is somewhat confusing, and one of the SC members just accidentally typed in some text in one text box (DQ reason) instead of another (SC Opinion)... just a simple mistake from having to deal with the large number of DQ requests we've needed to investigate lately.

There is a section where we can add comments and discuss the photo, and there is a section where we DQ or Validate the photo. Instead of clicking on add comment, they clicked on DQ, but immediately reinstated it after realizing the error, so it was never really out of the challenge at all. The photo is still being discussed and is STILL in the challenge, so it's a good idea to not reveal which one it is. It may still be DQed, who knows. But I'm sure the verdict will be in soon. ~Heather~

fingers crossed that the council lets it stay in the challenge
there was a fare amount of setup involeved in the shot that you would not do in a normal photo just for fun unless you had a specific challenge to meet. So its not a photo I would have taken year ago and just had laying around
I was not going to show the shot till after the challenge was over to be fair on everyone
now the photo is up to 5.9434 after 159 votes... it may make it to 6 after all :) but it could just as well start to go down

I have an question.. I'm sure this has been asked before, but what about the time difference from living in different time zones? I live in Australia, and the challenges finishes at 2pm on Wednesday. If I take a picture at 12pm Wednesday, my camera lists the date as incorrect, but it was still taken before submissions close...

how should we read into this?
I believe that the SC will put into account the location of photographer. If traveling outside the country to another timezone you should probably note the infomation in the photographers notes area.

Set your camera to your local time zone (where you are taking the pictures). We will take that into account when comparing the time-stamp on the photo with DPC-server time.
If you want to make the math easier for us, put a note about it in the additional info section on the submission page, such as "it's still two hours to go in the challenge, but it is noon the next day here in ...." If you want "insurance," you could take a photo of your monitor showing the DPC-Server time, and keep that original with the original of your entry.
I'm now relating to a DQ on the receiving end. The information in this post has been helpful. One of the goals I set for myself was to capture a photo 'Unreal' enough to be recommended for a DQ. A photo which was/is completely legal and this is now the case. The validation process is pending the SC scrutiny. I would ask any of you that may know. "Does a photo tend to score better or worse after Validation?" I'm pleased with the photo I submitted, yet may have shot myself in the foot by choosing NOT to use Photoshop to modify one 'detail' which many have commented on, it makes them think it was 'Unreal'.

there seems to have been 5 DQs as the entry list has gone down from 292 to 287
I don't think this will reveal your shot so I"m going to ask you which camera was stolen the Sony or the Kodak?
the Sony was the borrowed camera I stuffed up the date on and the Kodak is the camera I will pick up this weekend (had to put a camera in when I signed up) the stolen camera was an older model Kodak DC3400
