I keep in mind the theme for sure, but I rarely give a bad quality photo (even if it very cutely, humorously plays the theme) a higher score than a photo of superior technical/aesthetic quality, as this is... after all... Digital Photography Challenge, not "dramatic interpretation of words to pics challenge." :) THAT BEING SAID!... If the less quality photo is well thought out, humorous, interesting, marketable, etc... then absolutely it will score high from me. I am just saying that just because someone did their book homework on a title and took a shot that includes key elements of the book's plot and took a picture of it... doesn't mean it's a superior Digital Photograph than one that is not so strictly chosen/shot. If that makes sense?
Yep, I agree, I'm not saying a technically poor photo deserves a higher score just for being 'on the nose' with theme, but rather, one of the questions I ask when I vote is 'how well does this embody the theme' along with the technical stuff. If all things are equal, I'll go with the photo that embodies the theme better, and even if one is a little better technically, but the other embodies the theme a little better, I'd likely go with the theme. Blame my fiction writing background for caring about theme. :)
Yeah especially when the # of votes is low right now those 1's etc.. really slam your score down the drain.. I was sitting well until I just recently got a string of slam votes that took it down a full X.3 points after just a couple votes, I have 34 votes right now 0 comments 0 favs. Commenting is naturally not required but I would appreciate a comment if you are going to <4 an Image just to know why/what I did and can possible change in the future.
I probably should stop entering last minute ideas lol..
I have noticed quite a few entries have nothing to do with the title of the chosen book at all, so can only assume those entries fit the books story instead ?? evn though that wasn't the challenge so a bit strange.. i mean if the viewer hasn't read the book they won't get the connection will they.
I have seen the same so I am going to throw out a rhetorical question: Why could it not embody BOTH?
Could one not approach the voting like an English teacher grading 'essays'? There is no single ONE answer - the strength rests in how well a person supports his/her theme/thesis/topic/arguement. Here in the challenge, it is the strength of how he/she presents their idea in the technicals and the imagery. An additional thing I ask myself along with how fitting to just the title is :could it be a good fit for the actual cover of the said book? But that is just me - I think too much sometimes:-)

My score - pffffttttttttt - just waiting for some good comments/critiques that will make the score easier to swallow.
Was in a slow drop towards the 5's and then a click of the update button brought a nice jump upward and one of the best comments I've received recently. Thank you, mystery voter.

For me, now, it is not the score, but the participation. The fun of pressing that update button. Sorry Jahanna (tanguera), can not dedicate a photo with that score to you, but the fun part I share with you!
Already entered one for indoor macro too. That one should at least be a 5.
Doc, I think I know which one is yours. I am glad you are entering challenges again! Don't worry about the score, true expression takes time to be appreciated, even at DPC! :)
I'm pleased to say I overcame my spreadsheet addiction early last year. However, the update button is proving harder to kick.
Same here except I kicked the habit in September. One has to become a bit more philosophical about voting patterns. But I still use Niall's PC software in some challenges.

It's a fine line between submitting and voting for the vox populi, and doing the same but to please yourself. Usually the latter approach results in lower scores, but should you ribbon with an image that you shot and entered because it pleased you and you weren't worried about the voters...well...makes the victory all the sweeter!
