If I remember right, cpanaioti remarked last year that she got the idea for this process in a workshop. Or something like that. I've been doing google searches every once in a while, looking for other people, or groups of people, doing this. Can't find anything! I mean, nothing. It's got to be out there, somewhere, maybe under a different name?
I just created a Set on Flickr & named it Flip and Blend. When I did a search on Flip, only my own images came up.
It's a bit addictive ... I've been playing with the blending modes, this one is overlay and the final 90ยบ is missing but I like the colors.
pixelpig has a special talent to give so bright colors and shapes !

I had a request to post instructions for getting the spiral effect:
These usually start once I've done the basic flip/blend of horizontal/vertical/90 degrees with difference mode though I've been experimenting lately with doing just one of horizontal or vertical (depending on the image) then a few 90 degree flips in a row, then starting the spiral, or starting the spiral then doing another horizontal or vertical flip etc.
The spiral effect is created by using the options in the edit>transform section of the menus. I usually choose rotate from there but you can apply scaling options at the same time. By scaling down and rotating you get the spiral effect. I usually start with lighten mode, rotating in one direction, then I'll add a few rotations in the opposite direction using the darken blending mode and so on. It all depends on what starts popping out of the image as to what I do next.
I've found that images that have some areas blown out with some parts correctly exposed work well for this. If you have a series of exposures you are using for HDR, choose one of the brightest ones to do the flip/blend/spiral (or whatever moves you) on.
