I still do. It says spherical. And specifies it not be circular. Doesn't say nuttin' about hemisphere.
I reckon if it's got a predominantly spherical surface... it's gonna be good enough for me.

Honestly though, for me anything that could be described with the word sphere in the sentence (so long as the two preceding words aren't "not a") won't be critiqued as not meeting challenge too harshly.
Would be DNMC because those aren't spheres... they are domes or hemi-spheres at best.

Indeed. Even the best shot can only imply the sphere. If you can make a hemisphere look like a sphere...AND make it interesting and original...we'd like to see it. I'd say bring it on!
What is I take a picture of a ball being run over by a car. A sphere that's now an ellipse. No one better shoot that by the way. That was MY idea. :)
Seriously though, when I am voting and I see a object that is roughly spherical in shape I'll be happy. Now egg shaped is a different matter. I will beat you down with a ONE stick... :)

Correct... WHAT the subject is is not as important as what we see.
If you have an hemisphere object and shoot it top down, it looks like a sphere. The most we'd ever see of a sphere is half anyway. But if you shoot it side-on, like a waterdrop, then it's really not a sphere and thus is DNMC (IMO).
What would you say to, say, a marble that was halved, and the title being 'broken sphere' or something. It fits the bill. But it's two hemispheres (ish).

As regards "spheres", a picture of a water droplet on glass is much closer to correct than a picture of a frog. A picture of a plum is closer to correct than one of a water droplet on glass. A golf ball...a "unsquashed" ball bearing...a droplet of oil afloat in a water bath...a picture of Earth (per Asimov, actually an irregular oblate spheroid)...none of them are going to be "correct".

I have no problem with partial spheres. After all, a hemisphere is definitely PART of a sphere -- it doesn't say that you have to photograph the entire sphere. But then again, I'm pretty open to interpretation. However, there were a number of photos where I was hard pressed to find a sphere. I'm going to look more closely in a couple of day when I vote.

I'm kind of with you, but at the same time the challenge was "sphere" not "hemisphere". In my mind, only one thing and one thing only is a sphere. I'm just one person though so it doesn't really matter what I think...

I've gotten to where I not longer give a 1 for a DNMC figuring that there might be some way to shoehorn in what the photographer submitted into the topic...
However in this challenge, I was forced to hit the 1 several times... And without giving any photo away: "bulbous" is not "spherical" :)
I feel bad if I give a 1 for DNMC. I tend to just subtract a few points from what I might have given it... of course it depends on the severity of my interpretation of their entry.
