Another rejected, HDRI is definitely not working LOL... Not my style of it anyway...
I think HDR is a little old hat for them...unless the image is really different but up your alley might be some sort of unique style toning beyond the standard colors.
Rich colors do fly from what I can tell, like in this image but the folks there appear to look for a reason if things are over the top.
It was a long shot but i thought i'd throw a completely over the top 'creative edit' at them to see what happened.

No, of course not. That's why i didn't submit a photo of a painting. It's a photo of a dog which i played around with, enlarging parts etc. The head and eye for example is completely changed. Then i added a number of photos of textures, most prominently a photo of some rust i had, and layered and blended them. Took it from there really. Like i said, a pretty heavy 'creative' edit but nothing that wouldn't be legal in 'Expert editing' here on DPC.

"Creative" edits do quite well there, but I think they have to be blow-me-away material, à la Daria. For example, Der morgen danach, oder Fix You.
Wow! Those are fantastic. They are also very photographic and i think the problem with mine is that it loses track of that photographic quality and delves too far into digital art territory. There is nothing particularly good or interesting in mine from a photographic sense. Any interest is created through the textures and layers really.
Did they stop sending out accepted/rejected notification emails? I submitted on recently and after several days noticed it was moved into my not published section but I never got a notification.

Sam I like that shot but I think the HDRish nature of it might have hurt it over there. As far as reflections go something like this, which is a less common (at least, nothing I've seen before) take on the technique is what they'd gravitate to.

Understood. It looks like what it looks like, to me, and maybe others; that may be why it was rejected, was what I was trying to get at. (Was that a sentence?)

Yea, that makes sense and probably amongst the reasons it was rejected. Like i said above, it's kind of lost much photographic essence and moved further into the digital art realm. Which is ok for what it is, just not a photographic site. That sort of heavy layered and textured photoshop stuff is what i was doing a lot of 10 years ago before making a concerted effort 18 moths or so ago to concentrate on improving my 'pure' photography. The recent expert editing whet my appetite a bit and i delved back into it. It has its place but i am far more interested in 'basic' stuff now really.

apparently they did, which is not so good. but they also stopped sending notifications about new comments, which is not necessarily a bad thing :).
as in any other competition, you have to 'wow' the voters/screeners. The key difference between 1x and say DPC is a far more sophisticated pool of screeners, but still, subtle, "quiet" pieces demanding longer contemplation do not go particularly well over there. an image has to have something to knock them off from the first sight.

I too like expert editing but I'm a purist, basic and advanced are enough for me. What I would really really really like is a straight from the camera challenge. No editing whatsoever, no cropping, no changing of colours, nada. Crop it in your viewfinder and compose it before taking it. ;) Still waiting after two years here. Langdon, come on man, it won't hurt to try.
What a nice take on a commonly shot scene. Very powerful vibe...perfect toning.
There's a reject. I like the shot but it certainly didn't have that little extra to put it over the top. I need to go digging back in my files...something will show up.

Photomarathon 2010 (although i see they've held one in Vancouver). A very interesting photography competition. Basically 12 photos in 12 hours all straight from the camera. You turn up at 10am with an empty memory card which they check and they give you the first 4 subjects, then you go back at 2 where they give you the next 4, and again at 6. You finish before 10pm where you hand in your memory card which must only contain your 12 photos, in order and completely unedited. It's all exhibited for a month or so later and there are prizes for 1st 2nd 3rd and kids etc. Really cool idea i think and i'm looking forward to it.

You're right, I would love it. Quite the challenge but at the same time knowing that everyone is on the same level playing field is less intimidating than trying to enter a themed contest where so many pros could submit. I'll keep the link in my bookmarks, thanks for posting it.
ETA. I've signed on to their mailing list and I sent them an email asking for North American dates. There was one in Miami in March but nothing else planned as of yet.
