I agree that the quality of photos in this challenge seems to be below the norm. I'm not sure why that is. I'm not even talking about not meeting the challenge here. Just some ill prepared photographs. I love my entry. I think it is top ten material for sure. Unfortunately my score does not reflect that so I hate all of the other photographs. I think this is a common state of mind on here. That, of course, is why my photograph is doing so poorly.

Are you saying that your photo is doing poorly because voters see their own doing poorly and therefore hate all the photos they are voting on??? I don't know if that has merit. Mine is doing poorly as well, but I still believe I am voting based on the photos, irrespective of how I am doing individually. I would hope others are doing the same.
I know that when I last time said that some
challenge lacked creativity I've been burned like a witch.

Mine is doing pretty well, I think.
It is my 2nd. challenge, and I'm doing avg. of 5.2
IMHO that's not bad for an amater witn no equipment at all.
(guess you now have idea wich one is that) :)

I have give a hefty number of 4's or less in this challenge. After the first few, I made basically 2 criteria on which to vote.
1) Could I ever see this on a wall or on a calendar somewhere? I reckon if it is "art" then it should be hung and displayed somewhere.
2) Could I put it on the front page of the newspaper with big bold black letters above it that said "Conflict" and have it look like it actually belonged there. Maybe I'm old fashioned here, but I take conflict as being something with a protagonist and an antagonist. Difficult situations are hardships, not conflicts. Personifying inanimate objects to simulate conflict would be acceptable as well in a representitive sense of conflict.
But above all things, consider the source. I don't need Websters definition of it or anything either. I know what I'm looking for, the best you could do is narrow that scope even further. I was a little surprised there were this many entries in this challenge as this was a difficult challenge that I did not participate in.
Conflict was a difficult challenge - I had no idea how to come up with a photo to enter so I chickend out and left this well alone. I manage to do badly even when I 'think' I have a good idea!
On titles - they should not infulence the vote and I have been trying to ignore them and just look at the photo. Also I have a new rule - all my future entries are not going to have a title and I will see if this makes any difference to the votes I get.
After browsing the entries I decided to mark very low on all the entries that deliberately did not meet the challenge.It seems some people have entered just to get a picture in.
And according to one entrant I am stupid.

Yeah, i agree. My method: Since i know the subject matter in Conflict, and this IS a visual medium, i look at eah pic with the title scrolled off screen. If i don't 'get it' (see conflict) i say so, score a 1 or 2 and move on.
This time i did try something different - i score them all and then it gives me that page ranked by my votes. I take my top pic(s) and give them 10s. then the nest set 9s, so that i have some 10,9,8,7. Even if the best pic is not a true 10 overall, it is a 10 for this particular challenge - the best available. Anything I gave a 5 (average) or less stays there.
I know i have odd taste in pics - in Textures the three winners were not my top 3 pics.
I know others have odd tastes - my Conflict entry is not technically (lighting) a very good pic, yet is getting higher scores and more favorable comments than any previous entry of mine. I seem to be getting 'points' for what 'might have been' rather than what 'is'. Is this the ultimate in interpretation by the viewer?

I've been getting slamed with comments saying that my image does not meet the challenge.
This kinda blows me away and I'll have to ask after the challenge is over. Personally I believe to miss my conflict you have to be so preset on giving a bad score and doing it so quickly that it goes over their head like they are some blond bimbo from Hooters.
I didn't expect to win, but I was expecting a low 6, hell I started this challenge off with a bunch of trolls giving me 1's, what the F is up with that. Now I'm hovering around a low 5.
Maybe those who are complaining should start judging each image seperatly instead of bringing your baggage from the previous image.

If you think that you are the problem, having a bad day, etc, on some pics, than one can assume this on all pics. So if you doubt yourself on a few pics, then on all, how can you vote on any? You may be wrong on the bad ones, the good ones ... do you know what you like? If you like it, score it more than if you don't.
Question: You see a beautiful pic, but it does not meet the challenge. Do you score it high on it's own merits, or low for missing the challenge?
Question: You see a bad picture (lighting, composition, etc) but it nails the subject dead on in your mind. What score does it get?
I tend to score 'beautiful' pics higher than 'ugly bad' ones, regardless of challenge suitability.
However, I have seen pics of kids, sunsets, pets, flowers that seem to have no other purpose than trying to showcase their pic of the week, irregardless of the challenge subject. Sorry, but i feel those folks are NOT playing 'the game' according to the rules, but either feeding the egos with a submission or submitting any old easy to take pic so that they have a submission and don't feel left out.
Harsh? perhaps, but then if it hurts to hear it, perhaps it is because there is some truth to it!

Is the title describing the photo or is the photo describing the title? Has he changed his opinion or has he not? Who cares? If people are sumitting photos to showcase, so what, let them. The question should be simply, why did you join? For me it was to have fun, learn more, and study others works so I can be a better photographer. I have entered ever challenge since I found this site and I've received a lot of feed back (some good, some not so good) But the one thing I can say is that I am having fun, I'm learning, and you better believe that I am studing the works of others. Someday I will win one of those ribbons, you can bet on that, but in the meantime I'll keep clicking. Life is to short to take this so personally. Quick question: Is this site going to lead to you a great career as photographer? Can You win cash prizes?...No
