Stop trying to carve out DPC as you want it to be. DPC isn't yours to change. Frankly, this crusade is just as annoying as your incessant complaining about water drop images, aka eye candy. These water drop shots or eye candy is the sole reason DPC is where it's at today. If DPC started off as a fine art site, you twelve would be its only members. What a fascinating thread - the whole abstract thing kind of passed me by; I had noticed them but thought little of it.
It does strike me that there is one very heartening thing being demonstrated by people on both sides of this issue - you all care. That's got to be good hasn't it!

I really think you need to re-read all the threads and see who has done the crying or whining. The only one I see on a high horse at the moment is you, and that is a great disappointment to me.
I know that I complained about people being Debbie Downers - and I was speaking for myself, not the "collective" :/. But that really was in response to people getting upset because I submitted a photo that I wanted to submit. (A photo, btw, that did take some thought and planning and also included a product. Oh and no one told me how to shoot it nor did they see what it looked like before the challenge.)

Well, here's a news flash: I pay the same amount of money that you do to buy a membership. That provides me with the opportuntiy to participate in challenges and submit photos that I feel fit the weekly theme. I've been here since 2006 and I'm at a point where I'm creatively stumped and am no longer excited about shooting the photos in the same style that maybe I used a year ago. When a challenge theme gets recycled, I don't want to shoot the same subject. I want to challenge myself - and this means I try something new. This is how I believe I can best improve my photography skills.
It's fine that there are people out there who want to keep shooting what you call eye candy. The new people loooooove that stuff and I think it gives them a type of visual goal to reach. I know I enjoyed it when I first started. But there's got to be people out there like me, who are tired of shooting the same old thing over and over again. (or maybe I am the only one lol) I like trying new things. And I see no reason why I can't do that here.
So, I think this attitude of coming down on people for shooting something different, and omg, something DNMC, reeks of horseshit. My membership is due for renewal in two days, and you know what? I'm renewing. You know why? Because I enjoy this site, and it's helped me grow as a photographer. AND I believe I will continue to grow, because I will not let pathetic diatribes like yours stop me from participating. I plan on continuing to shoot and submit what I want - and I'm not going to be intimidated into doing anything different.
And you know, btw, only the voters, as a collective, can decide the outcome of a challenge - they cannot decide what gets on this site and what does not.
C'mon, let's get real here. None of us are upset. We just did something we wanted to do, because it was fun to do.

FWIW, I was a little annoyed as a voter going through the "collection" of abstracts. I am in the group that considers them DNMC (they ARE abstracts, NOT photos of abstract art, IMO). I voted accordingly. The "group" aspect of it is what annoyed me the most. Not that I wasn't included, but it just felt awkward and uncomfortable - that's the only way I can think to describe it.
That said, I neither applaud nor condemn those who participated. I'm not upset enough to burn anyone's village, in fact the thing that upsets me most about these situations is that people get so worked up about them. But I do hope the Abstract Gang will consider this a failed experiment. But I won't lose sleep over it either way. :-)

Actually, "we" don't think it "failed": we set out to create a work of conceptual art, and succeeded. One measure of the success is the amount of comment, both pro and con, it has engendered.
That said, "we" have no plan (or at least no plan I'm privy to) to do another, same-titled catalog, and I very much doubt "we" ever would. Been there, done that.
"We" is in quote marks for a reason; it was just a little, ad-hoc group that had a little fun together; "we" don't exist otherwise in any definable way. We're not a club or a clique, just people who paused in our common journey to pass a little time together :-)

Some folks are hurt about their exclusion. That will not change, so I'll take responsibility for that as I started the process of gathering interest. I apologize for excluding you.

I've been away for the last couple of weeks but if you do this kind of thing again, count me in.
To me, there's no question that the idea succeeded on the creative end but it sounds as if the evolution of the group may be the issue. I'm not sure - was it self appointed or could anyone join?
Hmm I didn't actually vote in the product challenge because I'm not really a big fan of product photo's and didn't feel like taking the time (I am actually quite a fan of abstract in general) but I did notice and admit was slightly confused at first by the abstract shots. I have to say I wouldn't have interpreted these to fit in the challenge, but that is IMHO.
If they had been printed and then photographed there could be no argument... :) right?
