Interesting news clip from the BBC. Thanks for that. I'd never heard the expression about getting one's "collar felt" before. One source says it means "arrested", but I suspect it has a broader application -- I don't think the man in the story was arrested, I think he was just stopped and questioned. Any UK DPCers want to chime in?

We have a Britisher staying here right now (Penny's brother) and he says it means "under suspicion"... When you're arrested, you get "collared".

I was asked recently to stop taking photos in a shopping centre by a rather annoying, petty, jobs-worthy security guard. It was worth it though to see the genuinely worried look on his face when i told him i'd 'already captured the shopping centres' soul' and was done for the day. For a second he looked really concerned by the idea before deciding i was a nutter.

The sobriquet *was* applied tongue-in-cheek. To be more specific, the man is Welsh. So's Penny, for that matter. They don't much identify with Britons, I don't think :-)
The ironic thing is, they are probably too scared to actually stop anyone who looks like they are from a Muslim country. Stick to the WASPs, that way they know they can meet their quota of `collars felt`, feel important and not upset the Muslims and get a ticking off for harassment - they know most of us are far too `British` to complain. Seriously, if I blacked myself up a bit, wore a sheet and walked around taking photos of London landmrks they wouldn't dare stop me.

They do when they want benefits, National Health Service, Education, armed forces, subsidies etc. Bit like the Scottish. They cry for independence, but still want the cash benefits that being part of the Union gives them.

She certainly was! And also assisted in unlawful entry of a public house for the procurememt of alcohol, though she will deny this and claim she was looking for Starbucks!

That is, of course, utter nonsense as anyone who has a large number of asian friends and family would know. Of course, if one got their 'informed' opinions from various idiotic media sources such as the Daily Mail or The Sun they may likely think like that. I don't know what your experience of this is Simms, but as someone who was in a relationship with an indian girl for 7 years and who's extended family includes many asians, and who lived in London for 16 years, often in heavily asian areas, i find your comment laughable (and just a bit annoyingly racist). Honestly, 'The police are too scared to stop people who look like Muslims'! Dear me, sometimes i despair i really do.

I was stopped once for taking pics of a textured wall of someone's house... beyond a joke...

So, if you want to avoid being harassed, dress like a muslim with your keffiyah wrapped 'round your head?
samething happens here in NYC, sucks I dont understand how a regular person or a tourist with a point and shoot dont get questioned but soon as I pull out my SLR and lenses I get questioned. This has happened more than once if not I am watched like a hawk.....It all really sucks!!!!!!
