I don't like the transparent overlay for one reason... it inhibits what I believe is a core component of this site, that is, learning. No longer can we post an image and ask for edits. Now we have to post a link to an image hosted elsewhere.
Now, if we can figure out a creative way to reenable (easy) sharing for educational purposes, e.g. a "make this image publicly available" checkbox, then I'm all for the transparent overlay.
The more I think about it, I prefer this to the watermark. I think it's too much to have a watermarked image in a challenge. Unless DPC's going to watermark after the challenge. FLICKR also uses this non-intrusive method.

As noted several times, images in your Workshop folder do not have the overlay. Images over 800px are also exempt since they're within your control. Either way will allow you to share photos if you want to.
It may not avoid copies if the person is really willing to take it... But I am sure that it will prevent a lot of ocasional copy and paste that most people do when see a nice image...
I'm for it. Most of the images that are liberated from this site are by the stupid and the lazy. There isn't anything to stop someone who is determined to grab an image. And if you really want a copy of a members image? Ask them.

You are able to use your own images. You would not be able to do the same with someone else's images.

I just tried a random image from March 2009 and that image was still 'copyable' (is that a word).
If this can be done to all Challenge entries, I see no real need for a Watermark. If an image is
found anywhere on the web, once this technique has been implemented, then it has been stolen, no
ifs, no buts.

uhhhhhhhh, why do you think you have the right to take anyones image & use it for your own personal use ??? I'm totally curious about this..... Cause, what they are talking about won't effect your own images.. But, you seem to be telling this entire community that you "take" their images at will, "use" them at will and you think there's "nothing wrong" with this????? I must have missed something..
