As I've just started a 2 year one day a week evening course I've just got my education (not student) version of CS4 :) From the t&c I can use it commercially and I can continue to use it even when I am no longer a student :D It's a little more than the student version (£180 vs £130) but the student version states you cannot use it commercially and you can't use it once you finish being a student .... even with the cost of the 2 year course I am still a couple of hundred quid better off than buying the normal version!
if you know a student in college you might see if they can purchase it as a "gift" for you. You might be able to get it for around $200US
Yeah, but I believe the student license says you can't use it for commercial purposes. That's what every piece of student software does. So no DPCPrints using it, either. Possibly even putting images processed with it on a blog with ads would be against the Terms & Conditions.
I personally use Photoshop Elements, which has way less features... but all the features I need:
Gaussian Blur, Unsharp Mask
Brightness/Contrast, Shadows/Highlights, Levels
Layers, different Layer (Blending) Modes, Adjustment Layers w/Masks
Brushes, Dodge/Burn/Sponge, Clone
All the selection stuff
That's pretty much what I use, and Photoshop Elements has them all. No channel mixer, but I emulate something similar to that with a Layers adjustment layer in which I change R, G, and B levels, and a Hue/Sat adjustment layer set to 0/-100/0 on top of that. Also, there's something about layer styles that you can't do, but I don't remember what. No vector drawing stuff either. Check the website for the features you lose and see if you can live without them for 1/5 (or is it 1/6?) the price.
ETA: As someone noted, old versions are a good idea. I wouldn't buy them from eBay unless they're brand new because you may be buying one that is still installed on someone's computer and is therefore illegal, but there are a lot of reputable sites selling CS and CS2 for very cheap.
For me, I went the education route. I'm 4th year Uni. BUT, I had to go through my local Taiwan branch of Adobe.
Here's the fun trick they did.
I wanted CS3 educational version which was just over $300 bucks according to Adobe's Canadian site. Eventually, the version that I am looking to get is only the Standard. I have little need for more than that. So compared to $679 or whatever it is.
So I checked and they only offered the Extended version of Photoshop as educational here. AND it was ONLY for the newer CS4. Now I don't really mind that so much, BUT the fun part was the pricing.
The price for the education version of Extended PS CS4 was just under $700 US. (around $620-640 if memory serves on the conversion rates at the time)
I explained to her that this was almost exactly the same price as the full version of Standard and that I was looking for something more in the range of $300-400 US as was offered in USA and Canada.
They were all 'no dice'.
So that ended that fun conversation. It took me a month and a half of calling around my University just to get that far. And I saved up for ***6 months*** to put that money aside. That money ended up going into my electricity bill.
I said "screw it" and went to CS3 from the webz. I do plan to upgrade to full and I have been saving my pennies for going legit when I start making some money after grad. But, while I have gotten to the point where I see a need to pay around $700 dollars for quality software (I mean, I will pay 2 grand for a camera and $1500 for a lens, and I don't make much money with that stuff), but I haven't gotten to the point where I will pay the exact same amount of money for a restricted license product that costs half that in any other part of the world.
It is probably worth noting that while I do know some people who pay for legit PS in Canada and America, I don't know a SINGLE person in Taiwan that has purchased PS here in TW. Much less do I know of any students who have paid for it. And I am in the photo clubs and I occasionally do PS workshops for them (yeah, pretty basic).
I got a job a while back doing some web stuff though and I've been using CS4 through that. It's only part time though...
I would get the legit version of CS3 if I could find a deal like Tez. Unfortunately, CS4 is starting to grow on me...
The price difference between US and other countries is also disappointing.
The US price is $800 ($950 Australian$). In Oz it costs $1150 Australian. Here in Europe it costs 1000 euro ($1450 Australian). So if I want to buy it here I cop a mark up of $500 Australian for no other reason than location!
But I still don't want to pirate. I have a relative who lives in the US and is willing to purchase the software for me and send it. Does anyone know if I will have a problem installing it? I noticed some legalise in the terms and conditions about exporting - but surely a single user receiving a gift wouldn't fall under this? I don't want to go to all this bother to have a product that doesnt work at the end! But $500 is $500!
I got mine using the student discount program for 199.00 for CS4 extended version, I know a lot of others have done the same. If you have someone in the family that qualifies then take advantage, if it were not for my son going to college I never would have been able to afford the full price.

That's apparently very true. As long as you are using it for non-commercial (personal) use, you can use the academic version even after graduation, including upgrading, last I looked.

There are two different student licences, one where you can use commercially and continue to use after you are no longer a student .... when I bought cs4 last year it was about £40 more @ £180. I *think* cs5 has dropped the lower version and you can only get the student version you can use commercially and upgrade etc

hehe - Adobe's (and Apple's) smart way of getting peeps to join their parishes. I know of families that are all using Apple gear due to one of their children buying a Mac cheaper on a student discount program - just because it was cheaper. Just like drug pushers...
I am an Apple fan and yes spent too much for many years with Adobe beginning with Pagemaker 3. When we bought my new computer it was sold with the licenses for all the software on it. The person who bought it ended up going back to a PC and sold his Mini with everything. The upgrade price from Apple is often affordable. I agree with buying an older piece of software as long as it includes a license. When I spoke to apple they were able to easily transfer the registration into my name which will eventually allow me to upgrade CS2. Have had other uses for my money up till now though.
