I agree also. The high contrast b&w would really bring out the textures in the face. The reason people like taking pictures of older people are that there wrinkles seem to tell a story.

As I earlyer read in a forum, a photograph is suposed to cause an impression in the person that sees it. And this one certainly do!
I was watching it and my grandmother came in to my thoughts. Her delicated but rincled skin, the goodness in her eyes, the passion for life in the way she fight to outlive her heart disease. The way she showed her love for me in hevery cook she made...
... It's a terrible expressive image that you got there. I just love it.

..oh! With all the emotions you brought up I almoust forgot: exelent ligtning and I love the DOF, the way th hear is a bit out of focus.
I really liked the color version, but the fact that I couldn't really see anything of the eyes bothered me. The black and white makes the eyes so much more visible, and I LOVE it. A wonderful, wonderful shot.
The left to right light is maybe a touch hot - notice the blown highlights in the hair and collar. Maybe turning her slightly more towards the light or using a small reflector to throw a touch of light into the shadows would have allowed you a more even exposure while retaining the great feel to it.
this is a very striking photo...i think i like the desaturated one a bit better.. it stirs up some deep feelings in me which is i think what a photo should do anyway...only suggestion i could make is that some film grain might help enhance the overall mood of the photo..

the reason i like the grain is because some parts of her face looks too flat wihtout any texture. at some parts it even looks blurred out even thou that is not the case...this is true for B&W version of course.(hope you dont mind the editting)
Yeah, i see your points. I do like the added grain i think... it adds to the texture of the face, and blends the smooth parts of the face in nicely. I think i would prefer less grain however than theodor's version, I think i liked cbeller's contrast the best perhaps. I think Setz's version was much to dark. Highlights were blown and details in the shadow were also lost. I realize that it is an artistic decision and one COULD desire that.. but i think like the detail in the face and would want to keep it, however, i agree contrast really adds to the depth of the picture. here is my newest version of my response to the feedback. (i will just put a thumbnail link here so i don't kill all of you with dialup) ps.. my image looks a little darker in photoshop than on this site... is that because of the working space i am using in photoshop?
i also thought that i might have done an overkill with the grain... but i like to be on more "extreme" side of things i guess... but your image i thought reached a happy medium.. nice combination of all suggestions.
a quick note: i just noticed the strand of hair on top of the right eye...may be getting rid of it by cloning or something might be a good idea...

and yeah i dunno what i think about that hair. it IS a little distracting, however her hair is sort of loose and here and there.. i guess since it is just ONE perhaps it is a problem... maybe i could leave it if it was 5 or more.... give or take a few hairs.

I think your recent edit is pretty good :) My light/dark version is a close representation of how I would have exposed the shot. I would normally meter for the highlights in a shot like that, which would not have allowed anything to blow out, but it would have gone darker on the right side of the image... which is not a bad thing :)
